Of recent, i have been pleased with Athlons Heras SPR 6-24x56 with the APRS9 FFP reticle. a good 5-6" parallax wheel will do a good job helping spread the numbers out from 40-55 yards. It's not perfect but it wont break the bank.

The Element Titan 3-18x50 (similar price point to Athlon above) does a fabulous job spreading the numbers out!
But sometimes me ol eyes have trouble with thinner FFP reticles in dark lanes esp against darkly painted targets.

When are you going to open your airgun shop to offload all your unused equipment? 😂😂

Just purchased a HERAS SPR 6-24x56 over the weekend while at the Oregon State / GP
We shall see how well it does replacing my ailing Optisan Viper 4-16's I've worn out in 10 years of FT use :(

I've got two of them.... so far so good. I like them with the 6" round mag wheel. I like the reticle i have on them. That said at 16X it is on the thin side.

Yes in the FFP configuration the reticle is a tad thin :( ... thus as a dedicated HFT optic went with the SFP configuration.
The SFP was cool that the reticle sub tension ( Scaling ) is at 16X eliminating the need to convert the typical 10X sub tension to 16X
They ( ATHLON ) even have the 16X mark in RED !!

My old eyes Wish i had your voice in my ear on this a couple months back.....
@Motorhead - I have an extra JD mag nautilus wheel for the Athlon Heras if interested... compression ring needs changing.

Exactly which model number are you referring to. I’m about to order one and I like what you’re saying.
Thanks!!!

I'm just getting into FT .I didn't want to spend a lot of money on a scope so I started looking into some cheaper scopes in the 250.00 range . I've had it on the gun now for a few years and it's working just fine . Take a look at the sightmark 10-40x56 triple duty . Its just a regular mildot reticle . The glass is pretty nice .I can put a quarter on my target at 55 yards and see the writing on it . I just use the high power to get the yardage and to shoot I back it back out to 25x to shoot . I added a small round side wheel to try it out and it does focus down to 10 yards . The parallax seems to focus in at every yard . I'm getting ready to change out the smaller round wheel to a coma type . I'm by no means a scope expert but I did look at a bunch of them in the 250.00 price range and its the one I picked . I liked it so much I got their 8.5-25x50 triple duty . They both have the green and red 5 brightness levels illumination . I'm just going to be shooting my old 1987 rws model 45 break barrel that I bought new in 87 and I'm out to just have fun and give it a try . At 65 this year I'm not excepting to do anything but meet fellow air gun shooters , learn all I can and have fun .

just remember, for HFT you are limited to 16X and if the scope doesn't have 16X marked then you have to dial down to the next lower marked magnification level. Make sure you run your RWS model 45 over the Chronograph to make sure you don't exceed <20 FPE. And i really like your last sentence as meeting great people is to me, what it's all about... i suppose medals and trophies rock some peoples boats but i like the smiles, handshakes, and comradery that comes with Field Target.,,, great people everywhere.

Thanks for the info I just looked and it does have a 16 number on both scopes . I was going to do the regular FT but the HFT might be the best way to start and get tips on the different positions from the pros .

There are no 16x scopes that range well from 40-55. I have two Athlon Helos 4-20x50 that work kinda OK and a 6-24x50 Hawke Airmax that is not quite as good. I have owned Hawke Sidewinders, two Sightron 10-50x60 field target scopes that are used by a lot of shooters in field target but not mid priced. I tried several other brands. Some are better than others but there is a learning curve with all of them. Some range better from near to far and some far to near. Put a 6" minimum sidewheel on what ever one you like and practice, practice, practice. Sorry for being the Debbie downer but l have spent a lot of money trying to find the holy grail hft scope. I'm not sure it exists. Don
I bought a car load of scopes over the years and spent a lot of money doing so. I finally found the Nightforce 7x35 ATACR FFP Mil-C reticle. Yes, it does focus to 10 yards. It works very well for me. I absolutely agree practice, practice, practice, with one gun and one scope.

Does anyone change zoom power during an HFT event or is scope always at 16X?
for HFT<20 FPE it remains at 16X so you leave it where it is and don't touch the scope except to range find via the parallax wheel, for WFTF <12 FPE, sitting on bumm bags, they can use any magnification they want and dial for elevation.
There are other classes like Open which is <20 FPE that sit on bumm bags as well, they can use greater magnification and click also

Thank for the info. So for HFT, a SFP scope could work?

Here are the Hunter Division rules from the AAFTA rulebook.

I think the rule is open to interpretation depending whether or not your scope maxes out at 16x versus it being capable of going to higher than 16x. Maybe someone has received clarification on this rule and can further state what is and is not allowed.

I read it as, if your scope has a max of 16x (or lower) power, there is nothing in the rules stating you cannot adjust your scope power during the course of fire. However, if your scope can be set to something higher than 16x, you MUST set it to 16x or less, which seems to indicate you can't change it during the course of fire.

Perhaps the "must" should be interpreted as "must not adjust to above 16x during the course of fire".
