high power 22 for small game

i have narrowed my high power squirrel and rabbit getter down to two(i think)... huben k1 is definitely top notch. Airforce condor ss is probably overkill but what the heck.Also looking at the brocock bantam hp or mag. all in 22 cal. recomendations??

I've got a Crown continuum shooting 65 FPE in 22. Can go higher, but I feel 65 is overkill already. Mine is modified by myself. Some port work and a hammer weight.



I'd really vote for the Crown or the Brocock. Hear lots of great things about both. Not so much the other 2.

Brocock. Hands down. I sure wouldn't dismiss the Daystates in .22 HP. nor the Edgun R5M or Lelya. All fantastic. Do not support the QC laden nightmare of FX... The hype is just that. Unless you are cool with spending $$$ on repairs and un-needed do it yourself upgrades just to get it to the same level as the forementioned.

I love my Hercules bully .22. Reasonably priced,nice adjustable trigger and all the power you want or need in a .22. Its highly accurate too. I push jsb 25.4 at 920-900 fps and group .72 at 75 yrds. And get over 70 usable shots as well.

I live in CT so here hunting on state land is .22 caliber only ,so I do own or have owned every brand made ,and same with energy I own from 12fpe to 150fpe in 22 caliber ,

I think 30fpe with pellets is the normal here for hunting up to 100 yards and can kill squirrels clean at this range ,

a sub 12 fpe is also has many advantages like my edgun leshiy I just put a sub 12 regulator in it , I can shoot and it is so quiet I get multiple squirrels or birds due to fact it is silent and only weighs 4 pounds with optic , so this is great also with thermal for nite pesting , and wont do harm or bother others with noise



then of course , I love slug guns , I have like 5 in 22 caliber ranging from 52 fpe to 176 fpe , and these are lazers and hit very hard and great in wind , actually I hunt Coyote with an edgun r5m.22 caliber with slugs ,

there is a big difference in price between air-force condor to huebon , many choices , I guess if I had to have only 1 I would buy a gun I can tune up for slugs and down for pellets

You don't need a lot of power for squirrels. I use a 15 fpe Brocock for squirrels and have taken them out to a lasered 63 yards, but most shots are between 30 and 40 yards. Most of the time there are too many trees in between me and the squirrels for anything farther. Rabbits can be taken at longer distances when hunting fields, but they drop easily with minimum fpe.

I reccomend a rifle with variable power and lightweight for all day carry. Something short for when your moving through the thick stuff.

It just occured to me you may be hunting ground squirrels, in which you would want something with enough power and accuracy to reach out long distances.

Honestly for rabbit and squirrel you could easily get a marauder or lesser expensive gun and do everything the top end guns do. My idea is that the high end guns shine at extreme long ranges in 25 or 30 cal I've seen Crosman999 kill rabbits at decent range with guns costing under 200 bucks. I own a condor that could kill deer and love edguns but rabbit and squirrel die if you look at them hard. It doesn't take much. If u do go top end edgun is my call. That dude won't kneel to snowflakes. Gotta love that.

Yep what about the Priest, anyone got the Priest II in high power?

The only thing , and the ONLY thing holding me back is the dam spring loaded pellet magazine.

IMO they suck big time, I hate them.

I read that terminal velocity to dispatch a rabbits is 4 ft/lbs and squirrels 4-5 ft/lbs. In practice, I found rabbits much easier to kill than gray squirrels. Any energy beyond pass-through is wasted, and you want to be even more careful where that projectile ends up when it finally comes to rest.

I would take a hard look at .22's in the 30 fpe range, no reason for more power for small varmints. Brocock Concept Lite,Sniper mini, Datstate Huntsman, Air Arms S510xs just a few to look at. I have used all these at extended ranges with some great success. These are all reliable accurate guns with no need for extra crap out of the box.

maybe i need to clarify... i live in the northeast usa and the reason im looking at high power is i have a hatsan flashpup that i put a huma reg in as well as a hatsan at-44. the flashpup advertises 29ft lb in 17 cal and 38 ft lb in 22 cal. after extensive testing im barely getting 26 ft lb in 22 cal. i have found at 30-50 yds its just not enough on large gray squirrels. most run off wounded. its very accurate mind you. so i want to bump it up in the (honest) 40-50 ft lb range. if it actually got 38 ft lb it would probably work. the best i managed was 28 ft lb with the reg set at 170 psi and the hammer maxed out. only got 5 usable shots before it dropped off

Don’t listen to the FX naysayers. I own four and never a problem. If you are close enough to drive to dealer, I would recommend that and shoot a bunch of different guns, then decide. I heard the hubens are hard to clean because you can’t remove the magazine.

For performance and ease of tuning, maybe take a harder look at FX.

If you ready have, I would choose the Brocock.
