High pressure "O" rings

I disassembled my AEA Element because of a leak in the fill port. Very easy to take apart, but was surprised to find the sealing rings to be square bodied instead of the usual round I am accustomed to. Is it possible that these rings are meant to be square. Has anyone else seen this?
@jland48 If you can post a close-up photo or two of the o-rings you’re describing that would help us to better understand what you’ve encountered. It can also help you to obtain better feedback. Like @nervoustrig suggests compression set is what you’re probably dealing with.

Are you sure that they aren't "X" rings.
"X" rings have four sealing surfaces, NOT just one like with an "o-ring".

I've used "X" ringe in my pump pistols, like my HW45, and my P1 (similar to the HW45) with great results.

The rings that came out of the gun were square in shape and badly decomposing (brittle), but I ordered some from The Pellet Shop and they appear to be round like regular o rings. I am puzzled. I even looked at them with a strong magnifying glass and they are just round. There was some oil in the area of the rings which may account for their condition. Thanks for the responses.
