Im a huge fan of Hill parts. I put the full kit into one p-rod with a huma reg. Here is the first time shooting it. 18.59 gr hunter extremes. Still some more tuning to do but with Tim’s kit and peek striker its easy to get what you want, be it higher power or shot count.

Welcome! Im not sure Tim sells a p-rod reg. If he does, it must be a new addition. The reg he sells was only for an m-rod as I recall, i have one for an m-rod but went with Huma in the end. Trenier outdoors sells all the Huma regs and plenums if you are going the reg route for a p-rod. The deburr tool helps prevent nicked o-rings too, especially from the gauge port hole, which can and will happen, at least to me! 😬Additionally there are some fantastic people here with way more knowledge than I have, who helped me out immensely when I ran into what seemed like trouble. Bigragu comes to mind among others.

How fast are you trying to shoot? You don’t need any of the hill stuff to shoot with relative good speed with factory TP for Prod, you do t need not want heavier spring. I tried them all and took them all out. 1720 doesn’t need any after market stuff, if anything maybe a huma regulator. For 1701 leave that thing as how it comes from the factory! Trust me, I tried everything and how it comes from the factory shoots the best!!!

btw the hill blue TP are the same and much cheaper from crosman directly. Don’t get the really large ones because the limitation is the barrel length.

qball is 100% correct. Also tried the heavier springs and went back to stock ones. The one p-rod I will leave completely stock bc it shoots so damn well. Here’s it out of the box, zero tuning from a new woods walker last weekend.

Agree the stock barrel is limiting factor. Stock pistol could shoot 60 yrds, but, not very tight groups. With the mods made, group is much tighter at 60 yrds and has documented knockdown power. 16 shots is all I get, but for 2+ yrs now it's performed flaughless.

for PRod what you said is correct. The 1720 and especially the 1701 are a little different, I’ve tried everything including a bunch of the hill products and most of it works well on PRod but not on the 1720 and 1701 OP is asking about.

the 1720 and 1701 both are match grade to begin with so hardly anything to upgrade from how they come from factory. My 1720 has a huma regulator and probably will cut a couple of coils off of the stock spring but that’s all the mods I have on mine after trying hill parts. I even installed a huma regulator on the 1701 and that’s a fail so back to stock form it went after spending almost 200 bucks of upgrades I ended up ripping out, I have two 1701s.

THE best upgrade you can do for your 1701 and 1720 is Vernon auston’s custom target grip! For the 1701 that’s the ONLY upgrade you should buy.

Forgot to mention, if you don’t put a regulator in the 1720 then there is slight noise benefit to install the hills de-pinger. 1701 will not need it.

FYI: I’ve spent more time “upgrading” and messing with my 1720 and 1701 than I have with my impact and they went pretty much back to stock minus the regulator I’m too lazy to take out from the 1720 because it works as a depinger.

Thanks for the input guys. @qball good to know; just saved me the time/ $$/ disappoints :)

Overall wanted to see if can get decent fps out of ~10gr pellet from the 1720; by decent I mean perhaps ~700fps. BUT if 'leave it alone' is the way to go... then will leave it alone (from the Hills kit perspective ). I do have the Huma regs (purchased directly from Huma). Btw, did your huma regs come with a separate plenum piece? Just curious if it was something new they added.

As for the 1701, I guess may just get/install the slightly larger (.67)TP from Hill... Huma reg or not will see what results w/o it (with larger TP only). If anything then, will save that extra huma reg for some other project.

As for grips... already splurged on Steve Corcoran grips/pistol stock. Thanks again @qball will keep Vernon Austin brand in mind.

I have no issues getting 10grain hades to 700FPS. My reg is at 2000 psi and hammer is only 3(i think) revolution clock wise. Don’t go for low reg pressure like 1600psi, the hammer and valve is made/tuned mid 2000 psi and with the short barrel low reg won’t get the power and super loud. BTW I have the smallest PRod TP from crosman, the stock factory 1720 TP won’t get you to 700FPS.

with regulator is is actually harder to tune down the 1720 without the more restrictive TP because regulator is at low end of the normal shot curve. This is also the reason you don’t want stiffer hammer spring if you have a regulator. Stiffer spring is useful to a degree if you do t have a regulator and will shorten your shot count and curve for a few more powerful shots. Regulator on the 1720 with stock everything else is the way to go.

on the 1701 don’t install a regulator, the tune is too short so you get abound 5-6 regulated shots? Ask me how I know! LOL personally I leave my 1701 completely alone because they shoot best at it is, you don’t want more than 450fps feom the 1701, slap on your grip, maybe add a moderator and enjoy shooting it.

Thanks again! Man great to cross paths with you guys on this forum. Lol

Def leave the 1701 alone... am seeing a consistent avg 545fps out of 5.25gr's.

As for the 1720, install the huma reg; leave the TP stocked(?) ...came factory with .67 installed (though they did include the smaller .40 tp, which I believe is same tp/size in the 1701).

Anyway great info/knowledge share here.

Pretty sure you can’t get 700FPS with stock 1720 HP TP but it has been a while. Call crosman and get the next size one up which is the smallest PRod TP, I’ll try to dig up the part number when I get some time. Set regulator to around 1800-2000PSI and with the Stock HS completely turned clock wise you still should get 600FPS with 10 grain pellet. If you have a good small drill bit set all you need to do is crank the HS 5-6 turns after regulator and drill the TP until you get the desired speed the. Back off the HS till speed drops off then add half a turn, you will get SD well below 5 and spread of less then 10, with that barrel it’s a laser beam.

Drilling the small TP a little at a time is THE best way, far better than buying a bigger TP than you need. It will get you unbelievable consistency and resulting accuracy.
