Hoarding or "Fear Accumulation" When is it too much?

Regarding slugs, it is pretty much impossible to find any for sale here in the DK, one shop do have NSA, but at a severe markup, and even their pellets are also expensive VS other stores, so i am willing to go very far to not put any of my money that way.

So the slugs i have are from Krale and Mundilar down in Portugal, i would prefer to support local stores, but thats not really a option sadly.

Shopping ammo in the US, thanks to import / handling fees and tax, not really a viable option for me :-(

I would give my left nut for the selection of slug ammo in the .22 caliber, but i am sort of locked to .117

My theory is a combination of having a couple years worth of shooting on hand, combined with how long would another pellet shortage last?

Any market system takes time to heal from disruptions. so figuring that if a shortage lasts long enough, new vendors will move in, and considering how much I shoot in a year (plus a substantial cushion!), I keep enough on hand to shoot a couple years without making an order.

Should times get really bad, I keep 10K crossman hollowpoints on hand. Long term storage. . . . . . .

SorenSD is from Denmark also and I think he swages his own slugs in .177cal. Perhaps he could point you in the right direction if you were looking for that type of solution.

Indeed but the pressslug kit ( press itself and cutter ) is 16.500 DKkr / 2520 USD,,,,,, a substantial investment, at least right now. Also not even sure if the slugs that form make are agreeable to my particular gun,,,,, for sure some research / testing will be needed before making that kind of tie down / investment.

I think you can do without the cutter and just repress larger pellets into slugs, i think Soren also do this.but that only take the investment down to 13.500 DKkr

Also it seem his newer videos are with off the shelf slugs and not his DIY ones, might just be coincidence / chance that is the case.

When times are good I buy enough ammo to get free shipping at pyramid air. Also if you lube your pellets before storage you should get alot more shelf life out of them. Not sure though I'll let you know in 5 years

I just opened a tin of CPHP that has been sitting in the cabinet for at least 25 years they seem to be just fine. In fact I was kind of impressed with the way they shot

Call me what you will, but yep, I have quite a few pellets and in 4 calibers. Do I consider myself a hoarder or fear buyer? Nope, I don't. While I've taken advantage of rare sales where they actually had a great price on something I wanted, the bulk of what's on my pellet shelves has been bought a few here, a few there over the 6 1/2 years I've been back shooting.

I probably only have a couple thousand rounds, but when I buy I do like to buy enough to get the free shipping. Like others have said, my shooting goes way down in the winter.

I am interested in the idea that pellets can "go bad" over time. I've never heard that before, but I am certainly willing to be convinced with some good data. Is there any reliable source I can read on this?

Pellets/slugs will not oxidize (go bad) if coated in a protective graphite or moly type lube, which most all are as far as I know. Except for one, AVS slugs are raw lead and the ones I got 2 years ago are already bad. Not sure if I can tumble them and have them survive or what but they are covered in oxidation. Glad I did not buy a bunch of them! 

Normal pellets, JSB, H&N, Crosman, etc will not go bad for a lot of years if kept in their sealed tins. 

However IMO anyone who buys more than a 2 year supply is absolutely hoarding and not helping the situation at all. To each his own.

I have roughly 7000 .22 and 3000 .177. at the rate I've been shooting those will last me 5 years or more. I haven't bought pellets in probably 6 months or likely longer. Most was built up well before the shortage. I definitely wouldn't call it hoarding. Especially not at the amount I have. I likely will buy a few tins a year to keep it up also.

I have a question. Around 25 or 30 years ago my son bought, from Sharper Image, a Chinese AK 47 style, side lever, folding stock, with an auto feeding magazine, .177 pellet rifle that runs at around 650 fps. and I can’t find anywhere that sells pellets for it or anywhere that sells a pellet mold for it. For the auto loading feature to work it has to take a smooth sided pellet. Some have recommended the H&N rabbit but there is two things wrong with that. 1 it doesn’t have the power to run solid slugs, and 2 they are not completely smooth on the side.

can anyone help me find some pellets for this?
