Hogs boar hunting cal.25

What happens when you hit a little left, right or low? A one eyed pig or one with a sore jaw? With a .223 it’s still dead because of the massive destruction of a 3,000fps 40+gr bullet. In the airgun world I guess if it’s a pest, it ok to wound it. On the flip side, if I had a pig problem, I would probably feel the same way. I have seen their destruction. Just chose to kill them dead without having to rely on hitting a quarter every time.

always reasoning by impotesis ....
my pcp with jsb 33 grain pellets ...
develops about 40 fpe, at a speed of 820 fps.
now if I want to boost the shot (acting on the hammer spring)
I could raise the power to 60-80 fpe. b
ut in this way the speed of 820 fps is far exceeded.
The manufacturer of my pcp (rti) in a note ,
advised me not to exceed this speed.
now, increasing the power / speed ....
what would happen?
the pellet swerves? Am I losing precision?
or can I dare?

Thanks to all we

You could probably increase 100 FPS and be ok. You should test it and see. You might be able to go up even more, depending on your barrel. At some point you would probably start to get some spiraling, but that might not happen till after 1000 FPS. Your accuracy might start to go down after 920 - 930 but it might not. You will find out if you try it.

Hey Mike have you considered slugs? I have never shot a Hog with a 25 air gun yet! But if I was I would test a few heavier slugs for accuracy and fpe. I would also use a solid slug to help with penetration of a Hogs tough hide and thick skull. NSA sells a sample pack, you could easily check for accuracy and fpe. If your gun likes them they would be way more effective IMO then a very soft Diablo style pellet. Here's a link you can check out. Good luck stay accurate and be patient with your shots.

thanks for the advice, i will try,
but i think it could be less accurate,
and grouping several larger groups.
has anyone tried h & n noticing this problem.
instead jsb and the like seem to be very precise.
I would like to try apolo domed copper 33gr.
they are covered with copper. I ordered some boxes.
but no one seems to have ever tried them. strange,
they seem to be hard and precise. an alternative to jsb.

Thanks

Dear Mike, unsure of where you are unclear. I don't treat pests w/ the same care I'd give game animals. I wouldn't intentionally cause them unnecessary pain, but on the other hand I won't follow them for 6 hours to finish them off. Clearer? Best.

I completely agree. All I was eluding to is why handicap yourself with an airgun when you have the option of using a firearm. In situations of eradication where it’s too dangerous or against the law to use a firearm, I say go for it with a pellet gun. But you should still make sure you have enough to get the job done. Wounded critters eventually start to stink and attract other nasty things.

By some answers here I suspect they’re not hunters at all. Sad to say, hogs are vermin. Farmers tell you kill em or wound em. Obviously you want to kill what you shoot at. With pests and vermin, they don’t get a pass.

If this comment was directed at me, you couldn’t be more wrong. I have hunted my whole life and actually my life semi revolves around it because I own or lease land in several states. For some hunters, a wounded animal is an epic fail, vermin or not. It means you screwed up. The wounded vermin is a lot easier to live with though. All I’m saying is just use enough gun or find another means of eliminating them.

No offense, and you're right. I understand where your coming from. I guess pest/ vermin eradication is about 2% of my shooting. And that's mostly airgun. 90% of my hunting is trad archery where I must be within 15-20 yds. Most of my pest shooting is red squirrels, starlings, and groundhogs. Like I said above, I don't want anything to suffer. Stuff happens and when it does, it does. Less concerned about red squirrels and more about deer. Apologies. Not an epic fail but a failure nonetheless.

Grizzly bears have been taken with a 22 LR. I won't be setting out with a 22 when hunting Griz.

Do yourself and your quarry a huge favor and use enough riffle. Someone on this forum harvested a hog with a 177, I don't recall the distance or size, but do recall thinking that wasn't a very good idea.

I rescued a friend that thought pigs were stupid, and a 22WMR was more than enough to take them. He got away with it for a while, but it almost cast him his life one evening. They are considered dangerous game in many places, and for good reason.

Hi,

Why does the Hawaiian hunter shoot the jsb .25 (33.9g) at such high speed (980fps)?

I can...with my priest2 can reach (without losing precision) 870/880 fps (55/60 fpe),

Question: Would that be enough to get the same results?

Question number 2: with a 35 cal cricket instead of hitting on the head ....

hitting the boar in the vital heart / lung area, would it be easy to kill?

Thanks vero much
