Home made stock

Recently a buddy of mine asked me if I would make him a stock for his Thomas HPX benchrest rifle. His only request was that he could fire it from his shoulder. I had been wanting to build myself a stock for my RAW TM 1000….but never having built a rifle stock before, I agreed, hoping to learn a thing or two before bui one for myself. This is what I came up with……

…well that’s it…I learned a lot of what works, what doesn’t..the order of processes..choosing a more stock friendly material…finish over dye requires a sprayed sealer coat.. and finally, how to create a new post on AGN.

@JohnTaylor Are the three slots in the stock a design choice? The target stocks for QB78/79, while a far cry in craftsmanship from your work, have the same slots.
I loosely patterned the stock after a rifle I’ve had forever…a Diana 75.. it has slots in the forestock and I thought they broke up that large expanse of flat nicely, so I went with them. Plus I think they look kinda neat..

Wowza

Absolutely beautiful. I'm envious of your skill & tools! I want a wood stock for my Bobcat. Think you could make one? What would be the sturdiness yet lightest wood?
Thank you…I’m flattered you would ask me to build you a stock. Unfortunately, as a retired shipwright in a Hurricane ravaged area, my wood working skills are pretty much spoken for in the foreseeable future.
If I were you, I’d stick to traditional stock woods…walnut, beech, maple…they are the choice of stock makers based on their unique characteristics. Short grain, for detail..density for durability, and grain for beauty. My choice of Poplar was purely circumstance..I generally have a pretty good supply of 16/4 and 20/4 beech, but had cut it up into blanks for custom hand planes. Than you again for your nice comments.
