How did you know you were done?

Antaeus and Aaron,

What about a box trap for .22 lr? With all the shooters listing shooting at nickels, shouldn't have to worry about ricochet in an open trap. Even with shoulder problems go to a pistol. Also in UT & VT surprising no open land near you? I live in crowded socialist NJ and I may have to go to my club to shoot powder, but even I can find some public land to go play, how about a WMA in either state?
I shoot cardboard boxes stuffed with a blanket, wrapped in tape or shrinkwrap. With neon dots stuck to it. With a backstop, just in case. By far, the quietest target Ive made. And the pellets don't escape it. The dogs still call me out!

You don’t have to give it up, just change tools! If you make a quiet pellet trap with putty to stop the loud impact sound the neighbors won’t hear it.
And a low power .177 with a good moderator will be almost silent!
I have a S200 with a moderator that is incredibly quiet, it’s extremely accurate too.
You can still have immense fun shooting 15 yards, even less.
I agree with rcarlisle, it’s just time to change it up.
I would sell the .30 and start researching for a new super quiet low powered rifle, or even a pistol!
This Steyr LPS was customized for extreme quietness and big shot count.
At 25 yards shooting off of bags you can shoot through the same hole, it’s so incredibly accurate that it’s hard to believe.
A shooting session at 15 yards with a very accurate gun is a lot of fun in my opinion!
To say nothing of shooting flys!!
No way should you move on in my opinion, just change tools!

View attachment 422942Yes! I have spent hours on my deck shooting the grasshoppers in summer. I have a Zoraki pistol topped with a bug buster. The 5yd parallax makes any shot possible. And the multi pump pistol means that I can control my power easily. I'm sure the neighbors think I'm a loon!

if you like something enough you will find a way. Airgunning is a sport,I like fishing even more,I like gardening, models and music, none of them is an end all, they are hobbies,if I can not do one there is another one,of I love optics, bird and whale watching,I am on a ten-year plan;I will be too old to do many of the things I enjoy now, big deal there ,is always dreaming:LOL:
Don’t get me started on my other expensive hobby. high end Audio. It’s worse than air rifles as we are a rare breed who sit in front of two expensive speakers and equipment listing for nuances and ghost images. 👍

I am in a apartment.
Shooting clubs here, though they exist, well i can not go there CUZ what i shoot ( bench ) are not really a thing in any club i know off here, its all Olympic disciplines.
Private land, fortunately my friend have some of that, but as he already died 12 times ( in a row within 1 hour about 15 years ago ) well he could go again at any moment,
Fortunately for him i am skilled in all forms of resuscitation but i am not around all the time.

Renting private land, it do seem to be possible, at least Viking airgunner have a spot, but i am not aware if he is somewhat affiliated or it is a complete stranger that hooked him up with his range.
That would be nice, and i would of course also pay for something like that, i am not looking for any freebies, my government "give " me plenty of those as it is.
Not entirely aware how i would go about looking for such a option, but i will work it out if i get to there.

Public land,,,,,, that's not really a option, also i dont even think its legal here, and even if you went " naughty " and into 100 % sniper mode, well Denmark is a small place and it would be hard to find a place where that was actually possible.
It is for sure not a option i would bet any amount of money on.

So yeah in a heartbeat or rather sudden lack of those, and i could find myself between a legislative hard place and a solid steel mock-up of the projectiles the German railway guns was hurling.

I will adapt and overcome, well i hope to at least.
I am closing in on the big 60 and its only getting worse with health too, but at least now i have a light weight bottle to tether to CUZ the old heavy 12 L bottles, well the want to carry those around are already at a very small place, hence why i invested in a 9 L carbon fiber bottle.

high end Audio
Tell me about it, my first addiction well aside for legal and illegal drugs, i was well into my 30ties before i was done paying for that.
And yes at some point i changed speakers more often than underwear, fortunately around the same time i was a punk with a illicit income too, but still a lot was paid for with the banks money.

Today i have nothing,,,,, okay i do have a set of Bose 601 speakers but no AMP or anything to play anything on, well aside for my PC.
Even my car audio ( which i was into in the 90ties ) well it is a cheap android head unit and factory door speakers, dont even have a woofer.

As long as it is legal for you to shoot in your yard I would modify the gun (as already suggested) and be careful about the time of day. I shoot less on the weekends when more people are around. During the week during the middle of the day bothers the least people. I also tell my neighbors what I am doing if they ask. Several others shoot pump ups. My lot is slightly less than half an acre and I only have room for a maximum of 35 yards. To shoot that far I shoot off a side porch but I have room there to leave the bench set up. I occasionally go to a range to shoot further but if I had to do that to shoot at all I might quit or at least do other things most of the time.

My little P35 in 177 is my least noisy PCP. It also sells for less than $500 last time I looked. Stoeger Bullshark is almost the same rifle and available in the U. S.. I use a printed moderator in the shroud on all my P35s. These are regulated guns and the 177 should get around 100 shots per fill. I'm messing with it now trying to find a more accurate tune but it has done a 194 on the 30 yard challenge (out of 200). It came shooting about 19 fpe but that has 10.65 grain pellets going almost 900 fps so I'm trying lower tunes. If I get to 850 or a bit less without finding something I like better I will probably try going up. The tune that was giving me ~900 fps in the summer was about 875 last time I shot it. So I could try pushing it back up to 900. A new tune on my P35-25 made a surprisingly big difference in its accuracy.

Well, I've been sitting on this post for a while, largely because I didn't want to admit to myself that as much as I thought I could get back into this hobby over the past few years, it just never really happened - and I don't think things are going to change anytime soon.

My wife and I sold our previous property in the woods which had given me the chance to enjoy target practice whenever I wanted, but there's no way I can use my .30 on my half-acre suburbian plot (even with a moderator) without raising eyebrows. Add in shoulder issues (and knee surgery right before Christmas), and I think it's time to move on. By no means is this a pity party - and I know I've been a silent member of the site for a while - but I guess it's more of a realization that as much as I love this sport, I probably have to move on.

Anyone else in a similar situation? I welcome your thoughts and opinions!

Antaeus

I've been there with another "hobby" myself and I understand the sadness but I found other things to fulfill my madness and took up hardcover book restoration and book binding for several years before I could get back to shooting.

It's OK to walk away, it's your life and your money. I too will have to walk away once I end up in "the home".

HERE IS WHEN IM DONE

rather than shooting i think more about if i recognise that i'm not safe driving any more and stop . i see a lot of old timers still driving past when they should have stopped .
BUT ! there is this old guy , comes to the range every sunday . Shoots a 30 06 with iron sights @ 100 yards . He is a lot older than i am . Shoots 5 rounds , all inside a 2 inch bull . That's it , goes back home . reloads .

Time to take up 10 meter rifles and pistols.
Since I am unsure of where I may end up in a few years after retirement I've been building a collection of 10M pistols and HW30's just in case, still hoping to score a 10M rifle at some point. I plan on shooting until I can't physically do it.
