How do I measure my ft lb

A lot of the forum members use their airguns in competition. Many of the various types of airgun competitions have FPE limits. Usually maximum FPE, but sometimes minimum. FPE is a critical number when working on a tune for those uses.
Absolutely. But in general conversation it’s inconvenient. Just tell me your Taipan is shooting a 18.1 at 925fps. Don’t tell me my gun shoots great at 34fpe. Then a guy has to guess if you’re shooting a 16 at 970 or an 18 at 925. It’s just something I’ve been noticing a lot of lately and it bewilders me.

Until we have a fpe legal limit in the United States, I don’t give two craps about fpe. My guns shoot X grain projectiles X fps. No need to do senseless math and backwards math.
Well, that's not what fps is used for. It's a general standard to let you know what your gun is producing so you can know what game you can take.

If someone says they are going coyote hunting with a .25cal airgun, most would say that's not gonna cut it. But if that airgun was a Texan pushing 175 fpe, then that changes everything.

In certain situations when it comes to animals that are getting a little large for our backyard shooters one could concern themselves with fpe if you are already borderline under gunned. But common sense with a .25 is any projectile going 900+ to the head and the coyote is dead. That’s from a 20gr H&N pellet to a 34gr slug. Body shots? Leave them for the big guns unless you like to search for carcasses. If a guy has a pokey .25 and he’s worried about busting the skull, well that’s not very common for all the fpe talk I see.

Addressing the OP, get one of these if funds are sparse:

I have had one for several years and although it only measures in MPS (meters per second), I still recommend it as it is reliable, works WITHOUT ANY external light source (in other words, you can use it in pitch black dark/no light). I have never had a failure to get a reading. Compare that to the reviews you can read about Caldwell, etc.

Or you can spend a lot more and be frustrated by about as much $$$ as you spend.

Good luck!

P.S.

I don't recommend the "stand alone" of this same unit that does NOT attach to the barrel as it is harder to use (easier to shoot/destroy it), although it does give you tenths of a meter measurements. The muzzle mounted version is nearly fool proof. Works every time and is accurate, up to plus or minus about .5 to 1 meters per second. Probably more accurate than that, but I like to err on the extreme side. That way I am sometimes pleasantly surprised instead of vice versa.

For MOST folks, like me and probably you, the muzzle mounted version, even though it only measures in MPS, is enough to tune most airguns and you should download ChairGun Pro for fpe and trajectory calculations. Although no longer supported, it is free, it works well and does more than you will likely ever really need. Don't over think it and you will save a LOT of money!

Good luck!

Oops...

Take a good look at the picture I posted and find the best price you can. They are ALL the SAME, regardless of "brand". Same goes for Chinese hand pumps. Find the best price from a vendor with good customer reviews... LOL! Even then, I always cross my fingers... I mean it is Chinese Communist junk. Yes... it is, but when will anyone in the USA make comparable products at a competitive price? And where are the other products competing for your money actually made? Probably China, Indonesia, Japan, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc. (heavy sigh)

I use Airgun Calc on my Android. only need pellet weight in grains and velocity in fps.

One of these days I may be "forced" to use a "smart phone/tracking device", but for now... I won't. However, I am considering buying an android phone just so I can use some of the software that isn't available for old PC users like me. The "phone" would never be activated, but I doubt that will stop the tracking...

If it's a calculation you think you'll need more than twice, my recommendation is go ahead and plug the equation into a spreadsheet. I put all kinds of common calculations into a spreadsheet that stays open all the time...so quick and convenient to use.

Nice! Can you send me this?
