How do you practice?

Once you've got the basics down, and trust your set up, what steps do you take to improve? I prefer situational practice. Finding places with terrain and wind that provides a challenge. I've found such a spot and decided to give it a try today. There isn't a single scenario in FT that can't be recreated here. While these pictures show three spots there are many more to be utilized.

Practice, what practice??? my practice session "is" the FT match 😜

Although I have the ability to win a match I am amazed how well a world class shooter that has dedicated his or hers life to practice can get! This is especially noticeable in offhand or kneeling! I consider myself a decent offhand shooter but I pail in comparison to a "real" offhand shooter. I've always sucked at kneeling and my body doesn't abide with it.

Good on you for getting serious about practicing, I'm sure it will pay off.

Looks like a great location to do your thing!

John, I'm envious. We've got 20" of snow on the ground here and the field targets I didn't take in yet are burried! Your point about simulating the conditions of a match is well taken. Praacticing off hand in my basement with nice flat, even ground and muscle memory to aquire the target is one thing and doing that at a match is another.

I practise HFT at an indoor range in Essex in the UK . Once the gun is bang on and I know the aim points are spot on its wind testing . Its outside in the wind and long distance ( 45 yards ) to see if the pellets are doing the correct thing . Once that's sorted its Standers and kneelers all the time I want to make sure of the shots that you can miss easily and that's standers and kneelers. Its at least 100 of each every week to keep my eye in . Once that sorted , its back to pellet prep and weighing them all ..... AGAIN ! I am using some JSB shorts ( not sure if they are out yet ) and they are fantastic at distance and the grouping is bang on . Weighing them I think I have to do just to make sure , they weigh really well . After that it's comp time .

You can easily upset your position in the basement. Try puting a pillow under your front or back foot with no shoe on for offhand practice. You can stack pillows agaist the wall to tilt you up or down while seated. Oh the reason I suggest pillows or cushions is because they aren't at all stable, at lest the polyester filled ones.

Edit: those big excercise balls used for balance and stretching might work as well.

I use both metal and paper targets. Use my Benchrest targets up to 30 yards trying to hit 2mm x. From 30 to 55 the paper targets get larger with a nickel size at 55. Use the smallest kill zone on metal targets to 40 yards. 1 “ past 40 yards.
Practice off hand 15-20 yards paper and metal targets half inch on paper 1” on metal targets.
Practice practice practice repeat

Agreed. Once everything is squared away in calm conditions, then out to the wind you go. Calling the wind and forced position are what divides the men from the boys.
