How Much is Peace of Mind (confidence) Worth

I purchased my compressor 4 years ago -- Nardi Atlantic P 100. I use it weekly to top-off my CF SCBA (tank 88 cu ft ). To date: 2 oil changes, and one failed on/off switch.

When seeing the prices of the Chinese makes and the YH, I wonder sometimes if maybe I didn't pay too much -- $3K. Then, I see the issues members report with these compressors and the accessories required to keep them cool during operation. For me, the peace-of-mind and ease of use is well-worth the price. But...that's

just me. The wife has diagnosed me as OCD.

Not enough for the one I want. But I fully understand not wanting to spend so much on a compressor all at once. 

At least I do have peace of mind with this AlkinW31E Mariner. I have children though so I can only dream of having to fill a 88 once a week. That’s a lot of shooting.

Buddy owns a dive shop, so I am covered thankfully. I will say once I graduate again I will be looking at my own compressor. For $2,800 that's one priest and all the barrel changes I need. So roughly 4 guns in one.

I've been running a yong heng pretty hard. It's been a real champ. Total cost now at $375 including stand, better pressure gauge, ect.

If it goes, I'll likely rebuild it. If I can't, I'll likely get a shoebox.

Can't put a price on peace of mind, however. But from what I've seen/heard, the new gen of yong hengs hold up.

Odds are with you on a long lasting compressor, and it can certainly do the job. I went middle of the road with an AV, had to send it in once, but am overall happy. I probably fill my 74' CF tank every 2 or 3 weeks.

If I were to do it again I would get one of the newer model YH's, and not loose any sleep.

Everyone have their own opinion. If spending $3000 and more on a compressor makes you happy. Go for it. But most of us, money doesn't grow on tree. We work hard and can pay $3000- $10, 000 on a compressor but just choose not to cause there are many options for much much less that gets the same job done. Maybe not as fast but I don't mind waiting 20-30 mins for top off or 1-2 hours to fill a tank from zero if I can save a few thousands. Been using those you called cheap Chinese compressor for over a year and still kicking. If already pay for itself over time. And when it breaks, hey I'm only down $200. Can just order another one and I would have lots of parts from the older one and still saves thousands.

Point to the place in my post where I called the Chinese compressors "cheap".

I happen to be retired and I don't have $200 to waste on a compressor that fails on me or "breaks".

The best compressor is one that works. The worst compressor is one that doesn't work. Everything in-between is a ROI, cost-benefit risk analysis, budgeting, sampling bias, environmental factoring (humidity), and selection bias decision process. Buy the best you can afford for the hobby. Enjoy life and help others where you can.

I'm not sure why we continue (as a community) to propogate the myth that inexpensive equals unreliable and expensive is a testament to reliable. Looking at Nardi and Alkin above I'm pretty sure that's the same electric single phase motor used in the LC-110, with a nice box on top for the start and run capacitor.

The real nonsense is the myth of over-filtering output air to Grade-D breathable... for ... airguns. Can anyone emperically cite specific cases of failure from moisture?

Perhaps its just me but peace of mind is knowing that I can get parts easily and I can fix it all by myself when my Yong Heng breaks down although it has not yet happened after 1.5 years of use. Until I got the Yong Heng it has never occurred to me that peace of mind can come with huge saving.

Perfectly logical. How much one wants to spend is an individual choice. The Atlantic and the Alkin are probably great but others that cost 10% of those have served people very well also. Only the individual can put a price on his "peace of mind".

The bottom photo depicts a fitting to my SCBA tank where months of use with no auxiliary filter . The top photo is of the fitting after the foreign material was cleaned off. I do not want that material collecting in my PCPs. No more "empirical" evidence is necessary to move me to attempt to protect my investment.

I was on the border of buying something expensive but went with the Yong Heng as I was assaulted and nearly killed a few years back and had to retire early so funds are a little tight most of the time. My peace of mind, OCD and addiction are real also they ganged up on me one day and made me buy another Yong Heng. ;^) So now I have an extra just in case I need it. I usually top off three small tanks several times a week so it gets used often. As far as one of them breaking down, I am lucky I used to be a mechanic so can fix it pretty easy. But in my two years of owning one I thus far have only had a single o-ring failure on a compressor and another on a filter fitting. Both of these o-ring replacements were five minute fixes. Oh, almost fergot the rupture disc replacement took five minutes also. I think you will find the majority of us had no failures at all or minor ones like mine with the Yong Heng. Chinese quality is what it is though and a few people had major failures it happens more often at this price point than at yours. I don't believe people should give you a hard time for purchasing your peace of mind as it is usually the correct thing to do. Did you pay to much for your peace of mind? I really doubt it but the only one qualified to say for sure is you.

Yuck, that is ugly stuff looks like you needs a bit better filter system alright. I would not want that inside one of my guns either. The only problem I see is not filtering enough as you said over filtering hurts nothing and is good for the peace of mind thing as well.
