How much to dispatch a Skunk

I am new here , but have helped many skunks achieve shots room temperature ! I have found that the best shot for no spraying is a lung shot, bigger target than the heart. They act like they got a bee sting. And dont associate that with something dangerous needing to be sprayed. Some youtube videos showing a fast kill brain shot, then after two seconds the skunk will shudder as the nervous system shuts down and then they totally dump the bag !

I've got my bi-yearly skunk, my dog annoyed it the other day and LUCKILY it got its rain coat, not her..entirely but whew did the place stink. She, the dog, went out this morning and started barking, the skunk let go a drop, pooch beat a hasty retreat. I'm trying to figure out its routine, I know it's under my work shop and the entry, so, need to add a few more trail cams. Reading the comments, going for a lung shot, it needs to depart my environment. My other option is to toss mothballs under the shop, it irritates the daylights out of their lungs and eyes and they leave.

I have rid my property of many skunks. I had a problem with them digging under my barn and damaging the foundation not to mention the one that chased my wife (in day time!) and a few that sprayed my dogs, neighbor, neighbors dogs. You should assume they are rabid, they are a primary vector animal along with raccoons.

The .25 M-Rod is plenty of medicine:

Having a comfy dirt nap:

Another, a vulture is eating it:

Digger caught in the act:

'Dillas get similar treatment, exit wound, pellet kept going, he put on a great show. They are edible and rarely have rabies due to their lower body temperature and armor plating from bites but they can and do carry leprosy and yes it can be passed to a human. Funny thing, we humans infected them and now they are returning the favor:

I usually shoot skunks in the shoulder though a few have gotten a Texas heart shot. Then I follow up with a head shot, double tap. I cannot verify the truth of it but it does seem that hitting them in the shoulder/heart or up the rear seems to quell their stinky propensity to off load some of it in my direction. The last one, a night job, I did not get a good shot and it charged me but quick follow up to the noggin while running backwards turned out his lights.

I had a skunk under my shed and the best way to deter them is by putting moth balls under the shed and around it! That stinker never came back!! I know it's not as fun as shooting them, but it does get rid of them! Here is a pest I dispatched recently.

I found out recently it's illegal to place mothballs outside for pest control , WHO KNEW ! Well using the Scotts treatment in the yard keeps the skunks away from us , but not from the neighbors ! So, I did run into a skunks before the New Year as I was leaving the barn on a rat hunt, I had the Kral NP03 set up for
~700 fps w/ Daisy HP's. Range was about 15yrds, broadside. I let a shot fly behind the shoulders. It jerked a bit then turned & fast walked toward the field & went out of sight. Mission accomplished , the vultures or owls would take it from there. No spray!

.177 or .22?

You could try the no-spray tube trap, which stops the skunk from raising its tail and spraying. Of course, you should ;) follow local codes when handling this stinky, pesty, hole-digging critter. A possum or coon would have a hole in its head. I wouldn't risk a heart-lung shot in the city and have it run to a neighbor's yard to pass away. I would be talking to the po-po. Anywho happy pesting

If you are in a safe place, about the lowest power PB I would use, and do use, on a skunk is a .17hmr. Never, knock on wood, has one sprayed when shot with it. Even so, I won't take the shot within 50 yards of house and I would never use any pcp period, lots of brain shot .22 long rifle ones do squirt, you need power to shred completely and instantly. Before I lost my big have a heart traps for a skunk around the house, I'd put the back end of one into a 50 gallon poly drum, front half outside drum sitting on canvas drop cloth that goes all the way under the back of poly drum. Walk up behind the poly drum, throw blanket over, walk in front pick up edges of drop cloth and pull it over the drum pulling the entire trap into the drum and standing it up. Myself and several people I know have been doing that for decades and not one spray ever. Soft hearted city people don't want to hear how they are then dispatched with no spray, works every time.
