How to Tune the Avenger (not the X)​

Hey, I'm trying to help out a buddy of mine in my neck of the woods (Peru, South America).

He bought an Air Venturi Avenger in .22cal.*
And he know NO•THING about PCPs.

I'd like to help him tune his gun.

● What pellet recommendations do you have for me (we can get down here H&N and JSB, some Gamo)?

● How should I go about setting the regulator and hammerspring?
Anything else I should consider tuning or tweaking?

Based on what I've seen from others, as well as my own experience, the .22 Avenger seems to do well with pellets in the 25 - 35fpe range. My rifle arrived with the regulator set to 2200psi and producing about 33fpe.

I ended up backing the reg down to 1700psi. The hammer spring was too strong...backing the adjuster all the way out wouldn't let me reach the velocity knee so I took out the spring and cut off one coil. That worked out perfectly and put it at about 27fpe, much quieter, and shooting most pellets in the 14-18gr range quite nicely.

Norma 15.9gr domes at 30 yards will do MoA:

as you have produced SO MUCH very helpful info over SO MANY YEARS on the forums!

I shoot only slugs out of mine. Weirdly enough it's accuracy is fantastic and hasn't budged even though Ive cranked all the velocity out of it that I can.

My reg is set at 1800 and spring adjustment to shoot 14.3g at 890fps. CHP’s are lasers and I get a ton of shots.

"Motorhead" did a nice sticky about filling guns slowly and chronographing a few shots as you go to understand the velocity of different potential regulator settings. It is a sticky. Might want to review it. If you have a target velocity for a pellet it may help to know what regulator pressure will give you that velocity.

We'll be looking at medium weight pellets (14-18gr), and medium velocities (850-900), nothing crazy....

Both H&N are readily available, JSB are more difficult to find in Peru — and a 500ct tin costs $22.50, plus shipping.
