I'm planning to try to optimize the slugs. I want to make them lighter and hopefully go faster, with the same or less reg pressure. Basically make as many peaks of the bell curves line up as possible while maintaining 80 FPE.
Yes, I could be persuaded to part with some. I've actually considered starting a small business making slugs for the huben. I figure theres demand, as hubens, at least my generation, are actually .223s so many other pellets and slugs that are .217 or thereabouts dont fit so well. Was considering offering someone who has a current gen huben make sure they work well in them as well. Mine is a gen 5 I think. Are current gen ones still. 223? I'm getting a .25 huben and at some point when corbin catches up I'll buy a die to make my own .25s as well.
In my huben, to get the 40.8 grain ones up to 925ish FPS, I have to turn the reg all the way up to 20 or 21mpa. This means that when filled to 5000 psi I get only about 1.5 mags before I fall off the reg and when I fill to 4500 I basically only get one magazine before I need more air. It's not a big deal to me as I tether to my great white but thought I would mention it in case you like more shot count
Update: so I'm talking with the very nice gent from krazy cool airguns and I might try using fine sand paper to make the diameter of my slugs a bit smaller, measuring with digital calipers, maybe make 5 of each at a few increments, then test them and see which has the best velocity. Then, unfortunately, probably have a new die made in whatever that diameter ends up being when dave corbin gets around to me. Seems it's just the back side of the magazine for about 1/3 of the way into it that is actually .223, which would explain why my slugs fit so well in the mag but seem to have trouble going as fast as others I have used. Live and learn, good thing I enjoy optimizing so much.
Update #2. I have borrowed a little mini lathe. I'm going to use it outside with a respirator wear gloves and wash up well after. I can mount my .2225 slugs in it without denting or scratching them too much. I have some 600 grit sand paper which seems to work well. Going to make one magazine worth of slugs in .0005 increments going down. Then I will fire the entire magazine over the chronograph and average the velocity of each one to find out which is optimal.
Once I know this I can have a new die made. maybe get a sizer for now, so I can fix the slugs I already have and continue making them until I get a new die. I have to wait about ten months before dave corbin gets to me, he is so back ordered. Maybe then I will look into making my slugs available to other huben owners.
Maybe i will buy some .251 slugs from NSA or AVS and then do the same with them, as i also intend to get a die made for my .25, and my .457 as well. I see AVS let's you choose between different backs of the slugs, flat, dish, cup, or hollow. Wonder how much difference those make. I think dave corbin can make my dies with different kinds of punches to make the different backs.
