As indicated in my previous posts, I’ve been playing around with a 2020 K1 .25, mostly getting it dialed for pellet shooting. This weekend, we’ve been playing around with slugs and since I’m a big fan of the Altaros in the Panthera, I decided to skip the baby stuff and jump right in with their 51 grain .224 offering, which has a BC of 0.21 😯. I wasn’t terribly optimistic because the K1 twist is fairly slow and these are boat tails.

First off, these slugs are a PERFECT fit for the mag, requiring a firm push and having no option to move - exactly the right length. I set about playing with reg pressure and power wheel settings to get a sense of potential speed, noise and feel of the shot cycle. I’m not interested in shooting a loud bucking bronco and moreover experience tells my that sedate = accurate. I’ll cut to the chase with a few metrics. Maxed out speed at 200bar was 995fps, or 113fpe. Perhaps one could get to 120fpe with a 220bar pressure, but that’s a bit impractical and the gun was angry at 113fpe. I proceeded to work my way down in pressure and wheel setting and found that the gun settled down markedly at around 950fps (~102fpe) at 185 bar reg pressure. I then proceeded to evaluate accuracy at that setting at 50 yards. Long story short, I found highest accuracy and Zen at 1 or 2 clicks below that level at 930/915 fps.

Before getting into more detail on accuracy, I want to remark on how sedate and quiet this gun is shooting at 930fps (~98fpe). It is fitted with a 30cal Sumo and is 3dB quieter than popping open a can of soda. Here’s a video demonstrating that fact and the sedate nature of the shot cycle:

I’ll be back with a 100y group, which I expect to be pretty good, based on the grouping at 50.

Here is an 8-shot group, with one hole-in hole at 100y. Shot into duct seal block into a tree with a piece of corn stuck in the top to help me spot it! No cherry picking, just 8 from bags with a strict 8 seconds between shots. Since it’s semi-auto, I expect it to be able to shoot quickly!

It’s around 1.6moa CTC, with the caveat that the soft putty tends to expand from the impacts. 8-10mph wind but that doesn’t mean much with a BC of 0.21. Not my Panthera accuracy, but considering the form and size, power and semi-auto function, I think it’s phenomenal!

Also pictured are the slug before and after the shot. Rifling marks are clear, expansion almost complete and every slug I’ve shot has expanded in a concentric manner, indicating that they are flying stably and hitting the duct seal straight. I didn’t officially test BC but the strelok predicted drop was right on.

Later, I’ll test some rapid fire, which holds up really well with pellets, but I’m guessing that 100fpe shots will not be so good!

So, double taps were possible but with a 3-4moa drop on shot 2. After 3 or 4 taps the mag stopped cycling and dry fired a shot. Again, not surprising - the plenum is relatively small. However, the gun works very well with just a 2 second pause between shots. I also found out that I can get 28 shots from a 280bar fill. Likely 40 if you have the ability to fill to the limit. Quite the hunting rig!!! All in, that was $80 of Altaros slugs!
