@BlackTitanium - hey man, was just wondering how your experiment with the inserts on the MOD50 was going. Did you settle on a preferred configuration that gives a noticeable (especially to your own ear, rather than just pure dB numbers) improvement?
From my experience, the inserts will give a better relative result on a higher power set up. The wrap material dampens the sound on a lower-medium power set ups since there is not a lot of air being moved and it moves at lower speeds. I think of "dampening the sound" as getting more of a 'thump' or lower pitch of the report, vs general volume reduction. On higher power set up you generally need more expansion volume to lower the report (dB) of the shot since you are pushing more air and at higher speed. Otherwise some of it will likely escape before it gets absorbed by wrap material. So at high power set ups, the wrap may actually result in a louder (relative) report.
I have since added a 3rd Module, and settled on using the Avalanche-High Power Startmodule.
This, so far, seems to sound the best to me.
Seems to be quiet enough, based on shooting rats from my bedroom window, at night, doesn’t wake up my wife.
Last night I missed a shot, the rat wasn’t alarmed by the shot, and I was successful at getting a second kill shot.
My wife said that she didn’t hear anything.
After reading your post, I tried adding the Avalanche insert into the 1st 40mm module and then both the 1st and 2nd 40mm module after the Startmodule.
The sound meter showed a 1 db drop with each module that was changed out, a total of 2db decrease with both High Power inserts installed.
It seemed like an audible improvement, until I went and tried shooting from my 2nd floor bedroom window.
I noticed a high ping tone, as the shot echoed between my and the neighbors house.
I didn’t’t like that tone, so I removed the two High Power inserts from the two 40mm modules, and I reinstalled the wrap inserts.
