HumaMod40 Avalanche vs Dfl Tanto (Updated)

That’s interesting. I’ve personally felt that everything DFL makes is louder than almost everything everyone else makes. Like you I wasn’t happy having to go full Avalanche on my .30 Huma. I like to go Avalanche in the start chamber then felt in the next one or two on my high power guns. But the full Avalanche just goes tink on my .30 Prophet 2. I don’t try to turn my phone into a sound meter. I go off a second party opinion of what it sounds like when I’m shooting at my house.

After much consideration, I think that is probably the best way to do it unless you are willing to drop a bundle on a couple of good microphones and some signals analysis software. My ears are pretty well shot from being an intercept operator when I was a young man. I have fairly good hearing between 30 Hz and about 2 kHz but above that everything is "covered up" by tinitus. Just listened to too many thunderstorms coming into DPRK from Manchuria. Two opinions is even better.

Even the stock fx can was quieter then the Huma40/30

When did I say that and what was the topic about? Almost all my guns have Huma mods on them in one configuration or another. Maybe my first impression was like yours. Seemed loud but wasn’t. Interesting.
After your reply on the huma40 I went out and did some more testing this time outside the last test was done inside. I was surprised but the huma was actually quieter and a tad more accurate in-fact I was shooting bird poop off a fence 30yards away. Thanks bud👍🏾
P.s
I like the looks of the huma better anyways 😉

I've put Huma (mostly Mod40's, but have two Mod30's) mufflers on many of my guns over...other popular brands, that are mostly sitting, or are on quieter pistols.

BUT, I'm also partial to the older Kevlar wrapped screen vs the new baffled, "Avalanche" models.
To my ear, the "wrapped" version are quieter than the new baffled (Avalanche) versions. I did try wrapping a pair of Avalanche baffles with different things to see what would happen. In my house, no other noises, they still don't seem to be as quiet as the original wrapped ones, on the two rifles that I tested them on. Or, maybe I just didn't use the right wrap medium !

I also have a couple of custom made mufflers. One works about as well as a Huma, Mod40 (two section, equal length). The other is a company made, but low volume sale, also about the same overall size as a Mod40, two section. The Huma is notably quieter, and looks better.

Edit - Just remembered, the Daystate baffles that installed into the shroud of my RTI Prophet, Compact, (.22) worked well enough that I removed the Mod40 that I had attached to it originally, and is just as quiet.
And my three Daystates, (Renegade and two Pulsars) still have their original baffles in them, with no other means of silencing required.

I'll second that the "wrapped" baffle fillers are quieter than the new plastic baffle fillers. I have a Huma Mod 40 Compact that was full of wrapped baffles, and I bought one of the new Avalanche baffles to try in the start piece and it was noticeably louder. That was on a Huben K1 tuned to about 35 FPE. Sample size of one, but a direct comparison.

Huma does say that the Avalanche is for higher power applications, and both models are still available - you just need to scroll down farther for the older wrapped models.
