Hunter Piston shooters - question?

I never owned a sproinger but I love my Springers. So why a pcp over a good rimfire? Both very easy to shoot well. No bottles or compressor needed with a rimfire . I realize many don't possess the work ethic to learn springers but I find it very rewarding. I view pcps like boats. Why in the world would you buy a new boat, or pcp. There are a bazillion lightly used second handed models of both. Fun must be over pretty quick with them.
And both of them usually leak. 😂😂😝

Having only 65 years of airgunning experience, and having owned only about a thousand airguns of all kinds, with all due respect my educated guess is for every airgunner moving from PCP to sproinger, two (or more) are abandoning sproingers for PCPs.

Happy Shooting,

Why shoot a springer? There’s no extra equipment to buy. There’s no equipment race either. No latest greatest gee whizz pcp that cost 1.5k on up.

Not many people shoot it so the chance of placing is better. Springers look good and don’t leak. The regulators never creep either. No lugging around a bottle.

The OP is asking about spring piston rifles and wants to shoot hunter piston. No need to hijack the thread.

As for the comparison to boats, that is a pcp.

So as an accomplished long time competitor why to bash another version of a similar sport. You should have the experience to be promoting not throwing shade. Your not helping our sport. As a long time competitor winning multiple titles try being positive with all shooting sports. So I have a shooting pedegrie also but like yours, that and 2.00 won't buy you a cup of copy today. Why do you seem proud about giving up a version of airgunning that evidently kicked your butt? Actually being part of the crowd never appealed to me. In my over 60 years of competing and winning at both the State and Naional levels I found what was hard was also by far the most rewarding once mastered. So when your not beating your own drum, in your spare time work on your spelling.

I have shot piston guns way more than I have PCP in Field Target and Really enjoy them when things go halfway the way I expect. Like stated earlier I find it way more rewarding when I get things to work but I will admit that there are more days that things do not go my way. After shooting Piston this long and when I shot PCP it is almost like cheating.
Most of my pistons guns will shot somewhere between 11 and 13.5 FPE. I have found especially my TX200's, I have found the accuracy goes to poop at about 13 FPE. I do have a Paul Watts Pro Sport that is shooting just under 15 FPE but I have not had the chance to shoot groups to see how it is performing. I also will admit that the factory stocks do not help with accuracy of a piston gun they need to weigh more.
There is only one way to find out if you are meant to shoot a piston gun and that is to try it. But do yourself a favor take the time to figure it out before giving up on them. I also believe that everything that is REQUIRED to shoot a piston well will improve your PCP shooting.
Take the plunge.

FWIW, I've also owned, shot, tuned, hunted and competed with sproingers for a half-century, and currently own five that I enjoy shooting. Not so much in field target competition, especially since using sproingers my last three FT matches. I'm well aware of their advantages and disadvantages, and appreciate their advantages as much as I mock the disadvantages.

That my poking fun at sproingers, buddies, family, politicians, boats, Harleys, Fords and blondes bothers some folks, I chalk up to a widespread sense of humor deficit in 2024. Tired of using this 🤣 to avoid bothering those folks; most possessing of senses of humor don't require it.

You should use the money you'd spend on a sproinger to buy a used boat instead. You'll save yourself A LOT of grief and aggravation.

BTW, that's not an opinion; it's fact.

.
I'lll back that up... it's a fact

but its also VERY rewarding when you get it dialled in and dropping targets

cant speak to the boat part, never had one....

A boat is like a corvette, in that, the two happiest days are when you buy them, and when you sell them, and that's a fact, jack..lol.

I only own two piston air guns and thats the swarm whisper 10x .177cal and the swarm magnum 10x 22cal. the magnum is more accurate at long distances than the whisper, which makes sense given the heavier pellets. I can shoot 1inch groups at 50 yards with the magnum no problem. Took me a bit of studying and practice to actually hold the gun correctly but it pays off. I dont know what kind of range you all are looking for but imo i thinks thats phenomenal for a 300$ piston gun. Another thing to add is that piston guns are much more picky with pellets than most pcps.

Biggest downside to shooting Hunter Piston is that you’ll likely be the only one in the match. New shooters want instant PCP gratification and trying to coax a PCP guy to bring out his spring gun usually results in a FTS response. Uj
So basically if there were no PCP's, that would eliminate 80% of the FT shooters..lol. Only the ones that can shoot piston guns well, would compete.

Yep and yep.

Had a friend ask me for an airgun recommendation last week, completely green to modern airguns.

I invited him over and we went through a bunch of options, starting with a springer. After he shot it a couple times I told him the main pro of springer is the air independence, cock and shoot, all you need is the gun and some pellets. The downside being how skill-based shooting them is. I referenced archery, and that shooting s springer WELL is truly a skill that must be practiced. His response was along the lines of nah, ain't nobody got time for that, I just want to shoot and have the pellet go where it should. We promptly moved on to PCPs, lol.
