So we have a pretty big elusive groundhog here on our small farm, and he is a problem. If i can get the job done, has anyone smoked a groumdhog before?

When I was keeping a small horse farm clear of groundhogs, I had my best success using a Havahart trap and fresh carrot shavings as bait. Can't miss them when they're in the trap.

There was a couple that lived next door to my Wife's family. The lady next door told me her Mom could cook some good groundhog her husband looked at me and rolled his eyes.
I also worked with a guy that liked them, said they ate grass and roots so why not.

Growing up I heard some folks eat whistle pig. Never saw anybody do it. Must be a reason. And we ate a lot of game. My brothers and I skinned one once. Didn't smell the best. Many years ago. I think po folk ate em. IDK

We used to shoot rock chucks with a guy from South Carolina. Toward the end of the day he would dig out his 22 and shoot several young ones in the head, clean and skin them and take them home to eat.
I never tried them and have no desire to either. He told us they were like eating rabbits.

Took them regularly in high school. They eat fine, slow cook them. Keep a sharpener handy when unzipping them to skin, the hide is tough. I use a hooked carpet blade on a utility knife to open hogs, and would use the same on groundhogs now, if we had them here.

When I was a kid if we didn't grow it in the garden, or raise and butcher it, or hunt and kill it we didn't have it. You bought the essentials at the store. I've tried a lot of wild game here in Fl. I can tell you though that iguana is not "chicken of the tree". Not bad, but tough and grainy, but I later found out that I should have taken some of the 3 footers instead of the ones over 5'6" long.

Cut stink glands out under arm pits, soak overnight in salt water. Then parboil till tender, and let cool. Pull meat from bones and mix in your favorite red sauce and serve over pasta. It is excellent. I have killed hundreds them.

He didn't make it away when i finally saw him out and my dogs did not rat me out. Lmao. The .22 throne had plenty of enegy at 50yds

I dont see why you can’t if you got a smoker that’s big enough? 18 hours in the smoker even shoe leather would be tender and safe to eat. They are rodents so most likely quite lean, I would wrap with lard half way though like pork ribs.

You'll get the best results with a marinade for 48 hours, then either a crock-pot or a pressure cooker. They're pretty tough.

I have heard it tastes like chicken. Kinda like that big Rattlesnake I killed when I was around 9 years old. Tastes just like chicken everyone said.
Well it is awful, we tried it fried, awful, we tried boiling it, awful, threw it out over the backyard fence and the dogs ate it and then got sick and threw it up. Ended up having to bury it.
I will stop at the store and get myself a big juicy RibEye, you all can have that groundhog. Grin!!

i tired woodchuck and accually crow as a kid , my grandma owned a farm and the ate everything they shot , I did not care for either , id say of allthings they shot on farm , I liked the morning doves and sparrows , she would pluck them like a turkey and stuff them like a thanks given turkey , ut the crows and woodchucks were in a tomato sauce
