Hunting with the R9...

Shoot off your knee or elbow while seated. You'll get more squirrels sitting and waiting. When you shoot a squirrel leave it laying there. Often another shows up to investigate the noise in minutes. Especially dumb young ones.
Another good way is with a dog that will "bark tree". He works the woods and trees a squirrel. You sneak up and get an easy shot while the squirrel is occupied with your little doggy. FUN!

My R9 shoots great off sticks, but poi moves about 1/2” up and left when using them. I just adjust point of aim to allow for it. I have to put the sticks in the same spot on the forearm also, I’ll get shifting poi if I rest the gun closer to the trigger guard. I rest mine right below the front stock screws for easy reference.

I just shoot . If i can rest off somthing i do , off a tree or corner of building if not then free handed, but if i got somthing to help i use it . Also i rarely shoot scoped. So i think that helps the freehanded point and shoot a lot . Most of my shots are up like in a tall oak tree so id need a 7' sticks ..lol.

Ots hard enugh to just tote the gun snd fumble with pellets out in the field alone then adding extra stuff if walking but if your on a stand then use what you need to sit and shoot comfortable.

I guess that r9 you just got is doing good ? I think you told me in one of my posts you ordered a .22 not long ago ?

Anyway you get out there and put all these things suggested and youll find your best method or way for your hunts..

Enjoy

No matter what powerful springer, unless you practice A LOT from whatever shooting position and aids you're gonna hunt from and with you'll miss (and maim) much more than you'll hit. ANY change in position, rest, or ergonomic interface between gun and body equals substantial changes in point of impacts.

I am not a hard core hunter who hunts all the time so take this with a grain of salt. I sight almost all my hunting guns off my elbows on a bench. I find the POI stays relatively close as an improvised field position.
Anytime I've introduced any type of rest sticks, bags, bipods, etc, etc I've found my zero changes.

I zero the rifle as I'll use it in the field. Example deer and squirrel guns held in hand. And long range varmint guns with the same bipod I'll use for hunting. This is with all rifles. Springers are the most temperamental. I imagine it's least important with PCPs

When I use my shooting stick; rest my front hand on the stick then rest my rifle in my hand.🥴😅🤷‍♂️everyone has a style. *this is if I was walk and stalking with a springer, even then I rarely use the stick; less to carry
Yes it seems like less to carry is the the way to go ...have you sat down to hunt using a dove chair or tripod seat or similar?

Oh yes! Tried many different things. If im gunna post up somewhere; I take something to sit on/extra stuff along. If I'm walking; I'm just carrying my slinger and ammo(aside from regular pocket stuff)

I find the same thing to. off sticks ..but I havnt tried to zero off bench and and or a rifle rest on my springer .My pcps are rested in a rifle rest off the tailgate of a truck at 50 .I agree though zeroing it similar to how it will be used in the field makes a lot more sense .

I guess I'm getting old at 54 because I'm used to sitting down to hunt squirrels lol ...being that the R9 is bordering on heavy 9.5 lbs scoped I could save more energy just carrying that and ammo ..backpack for water and food.

Ya, vs my gamo w f mach1 .22 it's forarm heavy. The gamo is lite and quick to shoulder and aim . Gamo did a good job of shouldering comfortable and comb to sights eyebaling..

Not to take away from the hw/r9 overall it does the job for .177 just a little more effort to hold up and the comb a bit high ..

Mostly it's go shoot and it all pans put to a nittin but a thing thing. What rver of the 2 i grab up they equally pop what i aim at.

I do think next .22 will be another hw95/r9. When the gamo dies.. i dont care to have too many irons in my fire and dont care to " collect" air guns just need what i shoot daily.. anyway the .177 r9 i like plinking from the bench but the Gamo is the squirrel woods thug right now.

I definitely have to go slower and stop more often than I used to lol. Getting enough titanium in me that I might be worth scrapping when I die 😂

I don't hunt all that much anymore, my head says lets go, my legs say ok, look for a stand, so now when I hunt small game I pick a likely spot and wait for them to come to me, not as productive as slow hunting on the move, but better than sitting home in my recliner wishing I was outdoors.
Anywho, I have several air rifles that I use depending on my mood, my R-9 is one of them, it's not anymore hold sensitive than my GAMO Bone Collector or my Crosman Vantage, they shoot where the cross hairs settle, now my Hatsan mod. 95 .22 cal., that's a hold sensitive air gun, great shooter from the bench, in the woods, not so much.
When I'm out hunting (mostly grey squirrel or grouse) I use what ever brace is handy and hold the forearm in my open palm, they always shoot where I'm looking (give or take a quarter inch ;)).
