HW100 moderator - **TIGHT** - how to get it off?

I'd like to clean the barrel - it's pretty tight in the space where you load it so best option is to pull the barrel off of it. That's not a big deal - I figured out how to do that. For those of you who might own one of these or something similar - whats the deal with getting the moderator off?? That thing is TIGHT. I haven't been able to get it off (yet). Do I need to vice the barrel and clamp it in right tight ( use a pr. of wood blocks or something ) and then . . . . I don't know - gonna have to come up with a means of gripping that moderator REALLY firmly to see if can unscrew it.

I was able to get some patches pulled through it but I had to go bass-ackwards using a straw feeding that down through the mod and then poking ( and poking, and poking, and poking ) around until I finally found the end of the barrel. ( using a patch worm ) This was far more "difficult" and clunky than it should have been compared to my other guns - taipans and rti's . . . . plus I'd just assume feed patches from the action end. ( <-- I tried that but for the life of me could not get the patchworm weedwacker string and the end of the straw to fins one another . . . )

I have an HW100BP-K and I couldn't budge the moderator even after heating it to the point I couldn't hold it with thick leather gloves on. What happened to me is the moderator unscrewed from the cone attached to the barrel. I was then able to clean the barrel. Be careful as the threads connecting the moderator's body to the muzzle cone are vey shallow.

This is how I use the Patchworm. First, I use a drinking straw to fit inside the moderator. I bought the straw that has the bend in the middle, a box was like $1. Put a patch or a felt cleaners on the string and feed it from the breech. If the straw is correctly placed, the string comes out the barrel. Pull the Patchworm through the barrel and enjoy the pavlovian noise that it makes. I use Ballistol on the the felt pellets, really cleans out the rifling followed by dry patches until they come out clean.

Would it be too big of a stretch to assume that attached could possibly be easier interpreted if it was attached/affixed . just reaching out a lil for lack of factual knowledge haha. ===Plausible maybe ??===

lol -- indeed it is 'attached' and seemingly very securely. I don't believe that it is a *permanent* fixture to the barrel though. It CAN be removed - the question is - is it worth the apparent hassle?? I'm leaning more towards no - just deal with the straw method as klunky as that seems to be.

They are permanently affixed but there is no problem that can’t be solved with the proper application of high explosives

I got mine off an HW110 barrel…

As cea1960 said above, at first the moderator unscrewed from the cone on the barrel - so that made it easy to clean via patchworm without needing a straw.

However, you guys know me, I wanted that cone off the barrel. I unscrewed the barrel out of the breech (HW110 is threaded at breech end) then put barrel in vice with some thick leather to protect it.

Then I heated the hell out of that cone. Clamped on vice grips using thick leather to protect cone. Still would not break loose. More heat and hit the vicegrips with heavy mallet, finally started breaking loose. Got stuck again halfway off - more heat and cranking - got that sucker off!

The combination of the deep threads on the end of a Weihrauch barrel as well as the clown who applied enough locktite to keep the earth from spinning made it a difficult job.

If you can just get the rest of the mod to break free from the cone - leave the cone on - its a ballbuster.

i dont like things that should come off that someone glued to let you know you shouldent TOUCH ! id take a dremmel to it if i couldent get it off , should of seen me hacking that droop thing off my beautiful RAW ! took the barrel off and tooka 5 inch flooring hand scraper to the rest of the carbon fiber shroud and got it off pretty quick !!! re did the barrel with a carbon fiber tube from amazon and it looks beautiful ! just like they sell them now ! has a slip on threaded end from best fittings that fits perfect and a moderator of my choice ! lots of fun stuff us hobbyist can do !

Exactly my experience with my HW100, lots of heat with a torch and the moderator base will loosen. I guess I'm OCD about such things, but I wasn't going to leave the base glued on. Whomever put it on should have his fingers glued together!

Another interesting fact about Weihrauch moderators…

The front end cap is actually slotted for a 7mm Allen key. So its easy to remove the front cap using an allen.

These moderators are excellent at reducing noise. Probably the best (and simplest) design I’ve seen / used. You can replace the felt - or perhaps just one or two of the felt sections - will rolled cork for even greater sound reduction:
