HW/Weihrauch HW30 50 yd Bench

Typically tighter fitting H&N pellets kill energy in an Hw30. Only testing in yours will reveal if the BC makes up for the initial energy loss. I shoot plenty of FTTs through my 30s but not for 50 yards plus. For that I typically use more efficient JSBs. I prefer the 7.33s that clock about 700-710 fps at the muzzle. Sometimes I'll use 8.44 if the 7.33s aren't working because of the particular tin or environmental conditions. The 8.44s clock about 640 fps. That's about as slow as I'll go with any caliber pellet at 50 yards. The 7.87s would probably be good if I didn't have problems with them running small. I'm too cheap to pay extra money for pellets that often run small. IIRC FTTs run about 605 fps and don't print any better for me than the JSBs at long ranges. FTTs are normally very accurate in most Weihrauchs at more reasonable ranges.

What caliber 97 are you getting Stormin?

The baracuda 8 fit real tight in my barrel, to the point of annoying, but they are cheaper to buy.
Have you messed with the trigger? My trigger screw keeps backing out on me.
Make a new one?
This replaces a Rowan. They make their slots weird and I made a new one for a guy that buggered his up
I’m not a fan of brass bling. And it turns green.
Easy job. Bust some chips

IMO a page of 50 yard 1" groups is very good for any springer. I'd be happy with that from any of mine. Sure I've had half inch groups here and there which is MOA but they might be on a page with a 2" group. IMO consistent 2 MOA is better than a rare 1 MOA.

I'm a proponent of posting full pages of groups because it shows realistic results and not a single possibly lucky group.

As to using a 30 for 50 yard groups. I don't do it. I'm a fair marksman at best and too much of a perfectionist so it frustrates me. Light 177 pellets and long flight times makes environmental influences considerable. Therfore i typically only shoot 50 yard groups with >14 fpe. 177 at that power has shorter flight times and 20/22 cal pellets at that power has similar flight times as the 30 but considerably better BCs.

Like @20cal guy I'll routinely plink my scoped HW30s and 50 out to 93 yards (my current max available from my front porch). I have a 4" round plate at that distance that's easy pickens with a predictable wind. Medicine bottles and soup cans are more fun targets. I have shot lots of beer cans and small water bottles at 100-108 yards at other locations. It's great fun.

Long distance shooting is something I enjoy and do pretty well with. I've learned that cant error is my biggest concern. That's no matter where the rifle is zeroed btw. Shooting way down into the reticle only makes it more noticeable and understandable.

Reading the wind is next important to me because I have the luxury of cherry picking calm times to shoot. Even the slightest change in breeze affects the POI with light projectiles and the longer they're in the air the more suseptible they are.

Oh as mentioned earlier a finer point of aim will help greatly. I use 3/4" sorting stickers. They work out to 100 yards for me at 9x. I will often lower the magnification at closer ranges to shrink there size relative to the reticle. I'm not a big fan of high magnification. I can hit a 10" plate at 500 with my 1-6x scoped 223 AR. I hit the same plate at 625 with 3-15x 223 Varmint bolt gun. I know these aren't airguns but I'm using them for examples of magnification vs distance.

For long distance and target shooting the Airmax AMX reticle is fantastic because the bottom post is hollow and graduated. I'm often shooting though that ladder looking thing at long distances.

Anyways kudos to you for a page of good groups and remember to keep it fun.

Be well
Ron
Thanks for your comments Ron. Really enjoy reading your posts. Have a Merry Christmas!

I agree their Rowan screws suck. I'm putting a Rowan trigger in my 30 right now (trigger is completely apart). And their screw is sloppy loose, so I just cut down the factory screw and slotted it by hand with a hack saw. Their slot is really rough lookin, definitely wasn't done on a swiss lathe I don't think. I really need to get a mini mill.

The HW30/R9 is very capable at 50 yards. Mine is bone stock.

Wow!!! Thanks for sharing!

I did adjust the screw by 1/4 turn and the trigger is 1.5lb pull now. No issue with it backing out but there is a tab that presses against the trigger screw that is to keep it
From moving. You could firm that up a bit.

The HW97k will shoot very accurately and be a whole lot easier to shoot (from a rest). Those 50 yard shots will group MUCH tighter with MUCH less effort.

My .22 HW97k will do shotgun shells out to 90-100 yards with good consistency. At least 50% on a calm day. At 50 yards they are no problem at all. So the capabilities of that gun are pretty impressive.

I've always heard the .20 was more accurate. Lots of guys swear by them. I'm a believer.

Don't stop shooting that little breakbarrel though. They are great learning tools and the better you can make one shoot the more precise your new 97k will shoot. A heavier more accurate rifle masks a lot of your mistakes and lulls you into believing you have learned all the lessons. An afternoon once in a while with a lighter gun will humble you and teach you a bunch.
Thanks for your comments, really helps reinforce forking out just about $2k CAD on it and a Hawke 6-24x50 compact IR scope.

Thanks for the additional comments. I decided to go with .177 just to make it cheaper for buying pellets and interchangeable with my 30. I’m not a hunter anymore either.

177 is a safe bet it will be a shooter. Even though I have larger caliber Weihrauchs my 177 97 is still my 50 yard king.

I don't own a HW30 but I know one thing for sure I would not be shooting a less than 1" group at 50 yards! I don't know if I could do that with any lead thrower . So IMHO that is some fine shooting 🎯 (y)
Really appreciate that! I have to say it’s an average of 5 bullseyes, 5 shots per. I‘m finding I’m slowly improving as I get more comfortable with shooting a Springer. And I’m really finding an improvement in 25 yard shooting after going long. I don’t get to plink much as I live in a city but our range is only about a 5 minute drive but the range is specifically 25, 50, 100 and 200 yards. Maybe when I get my 97k I’ll have a go at the 100/200 yard ranges. 😂

This is not my statement, it is fact.

Its only a fact to you. I disagree with your statement. How do you know what the intended purpose of the design? We're you in the room when originally designed it? Even if you were correct, it doesn't preclude anyone from joyfully repurposing a design.

I have routinely shot my 22LR out to 320 yards and my 223s and 6.5 CM out to 625 yards off my back deck. So I can mop the floor with anything I want. I still enjoy my toothbrushes out to 93 yards off front porch. Telling people what they should like is narrow minded. It's telling people how to think and that should draw flak.

Believe what you want but let others enjoy what they will.

Have a Merry Christmas
Ron

BULLSEYE!!!! 🎯

I have a .20 cal 30 that I've been shooting at 75-yards, but not at paper. I've shot shot shells hulls, CO2 carts, medicine bottles hanging on strings, and Air Venturi, Crazy Eights.
Its tough and fun when things click. My biggest challenge turned out to be cant error.
When we zero short, you at 25y, and I'm at 30y, then holdover with mil dots it's easier to understand cant error knowing the pellet is going up to that X and falling way down to your aim Point.
I put a level on my 30 with diopter s (clamps on the dovetail rail ) Amazing how little of cant can throw the shot off . I thought i was fairly good at correcting cant till i installed the level .

You can also bend the tab that the trigger screw goes through. They bend it at the factory (German locktite) but not as much on the 30 as the 50. When I'm tuning one I always straighten the tab so the screw is easily adjusted but I bend it back when I'm done.
