Tuning Hw30 Vortek PG4 + Short Stroke Piston seal

Anyone ever try out this combo?

Gonna try it just for the hell of it.

Just waiting on the piston seal now. Wondering whether it will even be compatible as the vortek spring is shorter than the OEM weihrauch spring.

I installed a Vortek PG4 kit today in a 1983 Beeman R7. I also got the recommended piston seal, but it was so tight that I ended up putting the original back in. I have an unimpressive 444fps w/7.9g pellet... I think I was sent the wrong parts...
Something is not right. I'm 8# plus on a fairly fresh PG4 kit with the Vac-Seal. What was it shooting prior? Time to dig in.

Something definitely not adding up. Is the breech seal fine?

The Vortek seals start off tight and size themselves in a couple hundred rounds or less. Do you you have 444 fps with the reused seal or the Vac seal?

Thats with the reused seal. The Vortek seal was visibly too big by roughly 1mm. I turned it around and inserted it into the tube backwards (taper-side first) just to see if it was possible to go in... So , then I put it back on the piston and tried again. After alot of swearing, I got it 1/2 into the tube, but it was so tight that It took all my weight to move it a little bit. At this point, I pulled the piston back out (extremely difficult) and put the old piston seal back in.

One thing I noticed when I had everything apart, I can see cross-hatch marks inside compression tube. Should it looked honed or shiny smooth? All my other guns look like a mirror in there. I hope somebody didn't wreck the gun in the past. There was also a thick washer behind the stock spring...

Gun was initally down on power when I first shot it-low 400's. Thats why I ordered the PG4kit + piston 7breech seals.

Im wondering if I need a different spring? This is an early R7 without a safety. I told Vortek this when I ordered the kit.

Inside the compression tube the finish should be cross-hatched.
I'm shooting 8.4s right at 600fps with my R7.....totally stock. I've been considering a steel PG-4 HO kit and Vortek seal.
I'll be watching your results.
Edit: I went the short-stroke(extension) direction on my TX200 and was not impressed with the results. I think that unless you go with a lighter piston and good pro tune you are wasting time (and power) with a short-stroke extension.

Perhaps you got a 26mm seal. The R7 (HW30) uses 25 mm seal. The Vortek seals have considerable drag when first installed but shouldn't get stuck. Although I'd think you'd have to be a gorilla to get a 26mm seal in a 25mm tube.

1, All the R7 springs are the same.
2, the cross hatch is normal on an early Beemans. It's totally fine.

3, Is there any visible scores in the piston stroke part of the compression tube?
4, I believe the original piston seal was synthetic, is that what you put back on?
5, if somehow that gun had a leather seal. Check the size of the transfer port. If it's bigger than 1/8" it would need a leather seal replacement. This is a Longshot because I believe all the Beeman models had synthetic seals.

6 let's see pictures of your original seal. I'm thinking it's whooped. If you cover the transfer port with your finger you shouldn't be able to push the piston forward much. It should hold pressure at any point and spring back to the start point when you let up on it. If you can push it to the bottom slowly with the port covered the seal is shot.

I've probably installed a dozen Vortek kits in HW30 platform guns for people in the last 6 years. I own three myself. All made 8 fpe or more when done without dieseling. Something basic is wrong and I'm betting it's the old piston seal.

You can message me for my phone if you'd like some direction.

Somthing aint adding up..

Anyway hate to say buy again or inquire at arh

On his kit he notes
"Usually no safety older guns- but I have seen safety models as well. We can build the correct kit If you email us you have an old gun. Later guns can not accept extra spacing and the kit drops in. Update 5-2010- We have an all new kit for the older guns (no safety versions) Please email us when ordering if you want the kit for the older guns."

i yet to have somthing go wrong on his stuff , but see some whats up things on vortex stuff.

idk.. i stick to arh personally

The cross-hatching holds the grease I think.

Well.... Ive never honef one .. the tube would have to be in pretty bad shape to do it imho. ( rust/pittedor some crazy out of round, or somehow worn piston scraping / gouging the tube wall. Ive not got or gotten one that bad a shape

Even slightly out of round that seals going to glex or expand to conform if its fitted and lubed right . Also theres that chance honing you end up doing more harm then good ..

To each his own on that ..

You Sir, win the prize! The seal I was sent is in fact 26mm! I called Vortek and after a few questions, he realized that I was sent the wrong seal & has a 25mm on the way.

The original seal was yellowish plastic/rubber material, not leather. He is also sending a spring w/2 additional coils that i can shorten, if needed. Not sure who I talked to, but he knew his stuff and they just made an honest mistake, and are fixing it!
