HW/Weihrauch HW35 Front Sight Removal

Mounted a scope on my hw35 and decided I need to remove the front sight. Looked like an easy job, just loosen the retaining screw and slide it off, except with the screw loose it did not want to budge. I restrained myself from trying to tap it out until I checked here first with more knowledgeable folks. Is a bit of force the next step or not?

The site will never focus inside the scope, you will never be able to see it as the parallax is beyond the end of the barrel. Anyway look to see if the site is dovetailed in the top of the mount, you may have to tap it out and there may be a set screw under the site. I don’t know if the HW 35 is made this way but some rifles are.

Going off on a tangent, but this is another reason I love old Anschutz front sights on HW rifles. Besides the larger selection of metal inserts, and the many accessories made for its bigger 18mm sleeve, the sight's attachment screw moves a small sliding "foot," instead of flexing the sight body itself. No problems with binding etc., the sight easily tips off when the screw is loosened.

HW sight on the left, Anschutz on the right.

Ya, i wish i had his issue instead of fighting it to stay put..😜
My first two HW both had front sight rattle loose. One actually fell off. In the grass fortunately. Now I just throw on a small dab of Loctite and crank the screw tight when they get here. No issues since.

That flat slotted screw lasted me maybe 2 days and it was replaced with a real bolt ( now and nut) so i could crank down on with a wrench .. + stickum in the dovetail + drops on each corner of the base + ...lol. i got drops of fingernail polish that if i see a crack in the hard enamel drop i know it's moving again as a indicator .

500$ gun + that great german engineering = sad 😭

Loosen the screw a couple of turns and tap it harder on the back side and alternately lightly on the front. Only knocking out hard from the back tilts the front of the sight down and it digs into the dovetail, making it hard to remove. Occasionally tapping it lightly on the front straightens the sight with the dovetail and allows it to slide off easier. A 2x4 wood block works nicely.
