HW35E .177

Velocity will frequently drop a bit in the short term, as the (often excessive) factory lubes burn off! But over time it should increase a little as the parts settle in. The concept of break-in time is often forgotten in our instant/electronic age, but is very much applicable to a simple mechanical device like a spring-piston airgun.

This is the second Xmas rifle I bought to replace the Air King Pro that arrived with the broken stock. That whole deal worked out better than I could have imagined. Much thanks to AGN member MP44 for parting with this one. Had time to test fire 5 pellets through it, very smooth. Looking forward to really shooting it. Only drawback is that Kim has taken a shine to it ha!

Wow! That's nice!

I chrono’d my new HW 35 E in .22. It’s currently doing 550fps to 560 fps. I hope it improves as that just under 10 fpe. I think I’ll be installing a vortek hogh output kit asap. If anyone has any recommendations please let me know. It’s easy and pleasant to cock but I think a bit more power needed.
That seems low. My .177 is. making almost 13. Kim’s .22 HW50 makes 12 and my 95 makes 16-17 depending on pellets. What are you using? Both our guns shoot JSB well. 13.43 in the 50 and 15.89 in the 95. H&N FTT also shoot well in both.

My hw 50s in .177 shows only about 9fpe. 8.44 jsb at 705 fps. Could my caldwell chrono be in error?

I’m using crosman 14.35 dome premier in the hw 35 e

I’m not sure what that gun should make in .177. You mentioned needing an indoor light source for your chrono. Did you get that solved or did you chrono outside? If inside it’s possible there were problems with lighting.

I purchased some LED lighting for my chrono. I tried my .20 cal HW90 and it’s showing 850 fps+ or 22 fpe + which seems correct. I think the new 35 E is only rated about 575 fps in .22. I think my cheono is accurate enough which means I’m going to purchase some vortek. HO kits in the near future

I have a HW35E in .22, I live and shoot at 4700ft elevation. My gun shoots at 550 with H&N FTT with Anschutz diopter, Motorhead did the tune on my 35, the performance is what I expected, buttery smooth and fun to shoot with diopter.

HWs typically have pretty oversized bores, and Crosmans tend to be pretty small, with hard skirts.

Try an equal weight pellet of softer lead like a JSB and see how it does. Might help.

But likely it will only be decently accurate with a large pellet like a Field Target Trophy in 5.53 and up.

Either way, a whole lot of song and dance to gain 1fpe that won't be very noticeable in practical use. Take it for what it is and enjoy shooting it when you find an accurate pellet.

Thanks for the data and feedback gents. I love the rifle and shooting it. With 560 fps give or take with the 14.3 that’s fine for me. I bought it for it’s beauty and a fun short range plunking. Ill try a vortek kit and maybe one of their vac piston seals in the future. Just for learning and fun really. I have an hw 90 and Hw 80 for bigger power. The great thing about air rifles is that it’s an excuse to buy more for each purpose 🥳

This is great info. Thanks cjtamu! I'm unable to chrono my .22 right now as I need a lighting solution for indoors.

Question: My 35 E is new and only has about 50 rounds through it. Would we expect velocity fpe to go up as it is used more or decrease ?

thanks

I have an HW50S in .177 and HW35E in .22. I think I need a HW35E in .177 to compare ;)

I'm on a quest to have as many as possible as they're the best made rifles out there (for me anyways). The 35 E is so much fun to shoot with my peep site on it. I tried the rws hollow point last night and there's more velocity with good accuracy there. so much fun!
