HW/Weihrauch HW50 .22 Open Sights 50'

I was shooting my scoped TX200HC .22 offhand at the relatively warm indoor range.I was shooting the old NRA 4p gallery 10 bull smallbore target.
My scores with the TX have been averaging from mid 70's to high 80's at best.I obviously need to get tuned up for the spring offhand stages!
On a whim I shot a target ( 2 shots per bull) with the HW50 with irons and the scores were 82 and 86!
may be lucky but I'll say that 50 ain't a bad offhand gun!

I tried a couple scopes on mine and didn't like it. Have williams rear and a raw aluminum exposed front post on mine now. No plans for an optic, maybe try another peep sight?

I have match sights on a bunch of rifles and the 50 is my field and "issue sight class" practice gun.Much cheaper to shoot $12 a tin pellets than reload 30-06 cast bullet loads

Beautiful stock on that rifle you posted!

I have that same rear sight you have.. had it last time on a bolt action.. been thinking about the umarex gauntlet SL 30 and figured if I got one I'd try to get the Williams notch rear sight and then make a barrel band with a front post and likely the post would be bright brass.. hadn't given aluminum a thought.. the SL is a new side lever action and they apparently decided to put the moderator baffles in it like the gen 2 bolt action 22&25.. the bolt in 30 didn't have baffles in it.
nothing like open sights, always been my favorite

If I'm reading your post right, you shot those scores with the stock breech-mounted open rear sight? Outstanding!

Be careful if you make the switch to aperture sights. They are horribly addictive... :(

I was confused on if stock blade and post or add on optic / peep..

Yeah .... shooting a 10 lb gun offhand is tough, the 6.8 lb HW50S makes it a little easier.
No matter - nice shooting(y).

I primarily use iron sights. Those who haven’t tried them are missing something special. My (almost) 68 year old left eye (I’m a lefty) has a scar on the dead center from a wire poking me in the eye when I was in high school. This scar forces me to move my head around to get on the outside of it. In very bright sunlight I do much better. However, I’m now learning to shoot right handed because my right eye is crystal clear when using Diopter Sights. Most lefties are somewhat ambidextrous anyway. Me to. Don’t get me wrong, I do like and use scopes. But these springers are almost to dang big and heavy already. Still have a scoped 98, 97, 30. But shoot the irons more often. Try it, you might like it. Unless you‘re like Mikey, he hates everything.

My .22 Schuetzen is 12.5# ,the 50 feels like a feather!
I think my 9015 Anschutz is about 10.5# and my 5-1 daughter shoots it offhand just fine.

I like shooting light guns offhand, but my scores are never as good as with a heavier well balanced rifle.

Well I guess except this time....

I could not agree more. I have a AA tx200 and prosport, and a HW97 and 98, all requiring scopes and are heavy. I tend to ignore them and go with one of the other guns outfitted with diopter sights. I like to stand up and shoot offhand, and honestly I tend to shake and weave more, at least it seems that way with a scope, the diopter equipped guns just feel steadier, from the little HW57 to my big FWB 300s and HW 77.

To me it's odd that people feel you need a light gun to shoot well off hand.
To me the point of my post was that I was able to shoot a relatively light gun well off hand as much as using open sights.
Look at match rifles they are heavier for a reason....steadiness.
I'm not saying you can't shoot a sporter weight rifle well. Because 30 years ago when my back was bad. I had to go to a lighter rifle or give up position shooting. My scores were not off by much but they were off.

Don't get me wrong I am by far from a highly competitive offhand shot. I just enjoy staying proficient (ish)😃

Of course the more a rifle weighs, the higher its accuracy.

It's practical accuracy for sure because it's easier to hold steady but mechanically i'm not sure. Off the bags sometimes I can shoot my light/Low recoiling spring guns as well as my heavier ones. But when it comes to off-hand generally (and I mean generally) I can shoot better with the heavier gun.

And with the heavier guns, if you don't shoot all the time with them offhand I will give in to the fatigue of the heavier gun in a long string can sometimes make you shoot worse than if you were to shoot a lighter gun.

It may sound like i'm arguing for and against myself but i'm just talking..
