This is my current favorite. IMO, the .177 HW50 at 10-11 fpe is the best factory springer for small game hunting out to 40 meters. The only caveat to that is in scenarios of high winds.

Mine really likes 8.64 FTT and it’s incredibly consistent from day to day. I routinely dispatch house sparrows out to 30 meters with only a side rest and I’ve yet to miss. It’s also ideal for still hunting or ambushing rabbits and squirrels. At first I disliked the factory stock but it actually has grown on me quite a bit.

You hear a lot about the HW95/98/97 and HW30(both of which I own) but if I could only have one the HW50 in .177 would be it.

Your scope and muzzle and stock all look good together. Nice write-up too.
Thank you! I have both the ARH Indoor Plinker(9 fpe) and ARH Standard(11 fpe) tune kits sitting on the shelf. However, it has been so accurate, consistent, and well mannered from the factory that I’ve not yet seen the need to mess with it.

I own, or have owned in the past, virtually all HW models and am in full agreement with you. After trying one hw50s in .177, I likely it so much I got another. One is setup with a Vortek kit shooting about 11fpe and the other with the ARH indoor plinkers kit at about 9fpe. I shoot the ARH gun most often. Great target gun or small game hunter out to 40 yards.

I inspired myself and shot three 5-shot groups at 20 meters. I believe this gun would easily pass the 10 dimes challenge! It's amazing how accurate these break barrels are when you the shooter find your groove.

I also shot a 5-shot string through the chronograph and it averaged 745 fps with the 8.64 FTT which equates to 10.65 fpe. ES was 10 fps...

That's right about where it should be with that pellet. You can pickup a little more power with the 8.44 JSBs but if you're happy with it now stay with the FTTs

Awesome little guns. I feel the same way about mine that you do yours. Mine is also a .177.

Shot mine with just boxed Crosman Premiers for a couple years, as it came, no tuning or lube or anything. Finally put in Maccarri's standard HW50s kit (NOT the indoor plinker) with one of his sized Hornet seals and liked it even more after the kit install. Shot cycle is just a quick and solid push, no twisting or torqueing or twangy or any other noise for that matter. I like how it shoots enough that I bought a couple more springs and seals a while back. Should be enough to keep that gun going for the rest of my life.

After installing the ARH kit, I settled on the JSB 7.87 and it puts them out at 710fps when it's warm, and about 720 in colder weather. Consistent as can be. In fact, I bust out the HW50s as a chrono tester when I'm messing with tuning a springer and questioning my fps. I live at 5600feet and have to be happy with 9fpe, which isn't hard when it shoots as accurately as it does.

Only settled on the 7.87s cuz they were the best combination of fpe and trajectory, but the barrel in mine will shoot just about any decent pellet with acceptable accuracy.

Funny thing about the HW50s for me....it was my first quality springer, in fact, it was my first quality airgun and the most I had spent on an airgun at the time. Shoots SOOO good but for some silly reason I had to work through the line up and try some of HW's bigger/heavier/more powerful springers. Sold them all off, but I still have that little HW50s.

Thanks for sharing. You may have just influenced me to spend a little time with my old friend the HW50s tomorrow.

Hello my BROTHER ! lol. I have the HW50s >.177. Bought it last spring. I put a Hawke 2-7x32 on mine. (I'm mindful of top heavy "tendencies") I never had a .177 before. Always 22s. It's just the sweetest little gem in my meager collection. She likes the H&N FTT 4.50-8.64gr and H&N Baracuda Match 4.50-10.65gr pellets. I bring her out more than any of the others, even my FX Classic Dream. They did it right with this one, hands down!

I gave the 50 a good barrel cleaning and switched to JSB 7.87. It pushed them to 805 fps for 11.3 fpe. Over .5 fpe more than the FTT 8.64 yielded! More importantly…these 7.87 are even more accurate than the 8.64 FTT. Absolute lasers out to the 30 meters I’ve shot them. Can’t wait to try them on paper.
