HW50s Question....

Specifically a question about the open sights on this rifle, I find the open sights to be VERY difficult to use when aiming at targets with a dark background and in poor lighting (like is more often than not on the hunting conditions) my question is does anyone have a solution to this problem without adding any weight to the rifle? I want to use this gun in hunt settings and don't want to carry any extra weight around for hours on end. I just want to find out if others have rectified this problem without changing the stock sights, just making altercations to what we have.

Heres whhat i did. It aint 100% but did help alot

Little dab of bright orange paint on just the tip of the front post maybe??
That's going to help for sure, The fact that the rifle needs to have the front sight completely covering the target...if it's small like a squirrel or a two inch bulls eye otherwise you shoot under it. The rear sight is adjusted as far down as it will go, I'm thinking a Williams peep and a dot of some bright color like you stated on the front post might do the trick. I need something to get the sight down enough to shoot just over the top of the front sight...without adding any appreciable weight to the overall rifle. Thanks for the reply.

Whats amazing is no one come up with a better target aftermarket set . For what you see in hype and cost of a he but still keep that dismal set going on them. That dark cave of a globe is the main killer on one . If a replacement was not a 1/4 (lol) of the guns pricing id get a extra to drill holes in it to allow light to shine on the post. ( Notice how open the truhlo globe is ). .

I'm going to town today, I'm going to try and find a container like a touch up auto paint with a bright color to try the dot on the front sight. Thanks for that tip.
Good luck with that.. you notice that bright yellow nail polish i last tried in that link? No better then it was left black.. lol. Being i shoot irond 90% of the time , ive tried a lot to better that . That glitter flake at least catches and reflects some light to make it pop up to see.

If the front sight is completely covering the target you should be adjusting the rear sight up, not down? I have 2 50S and quite a few other HWs and have no issue zeroing them from 10-50yds. The one exception is that lollipop insert which I assume is meant to cover a 10m target. Not sure about that one though.

Regarding a Williams peep sight I say go for it though. I love the couple that I have. Night and day difference in target acquisition

One thig i thought of but again thanks to hw pricing was get the thinest +/- truglo fiber strand , micro drill bits then drill a hole in the post that you could insert a snip of the truglo fiber in it. ..

Anyway is good overcast no sun with the glitter post. . if you cant see that , i just dont know.. maybe phosphorus glow in the dark paint ?

The iron sights that come with HW rifles are the best factory irons that I've used. What you're calling negatives (hard to see in low light) is just the fact of the matter when it comes to iron sights.

Your kidding right? Got to be.😇
Nope. Serious.

I'm coming from the opinion that the oversized "fiber optic" Trueglo type stuff that comes on cheap springers are just too big. They cover the entire sight picture. Sure, you can see the big red or orange colored thing out there on the end of the gun, but that's all you can see.

The HW have the front globe inserts, as well as the 4 choices for rear sight. That's a lot of combinations that should make most folks be able to find something they like. Especially if they care to hit what they're aiming at.

I'm with you. The tru glo sights on most guns don't work well for me at all. The front globe setup let's me switch easily between different types of shooting and works great with an aperture. The only better irons I've used on a springer are the ones on the new FWB Sport. Had Feinwerkbau made the inserts replaceable they would be perfect IMO

Ya, i agree on most truglo being overwhelming. One gun i call it like staring into the sun.. .. the why so big a shotgun use series looking . Lol

Hw sights are ok. Just leaves a little to be desired at the price point. Simple measures help correct them. Like i firmed the rear assembly from moving , made a sun shade to stop glate on the blade/ notch, that gold dot on the post to offset the blurring in the notch , ect.

As far as the post bead goes natural ivory and gold are the best most desired bead material / most visual.

You figure the years of sight and stock combe complaining you see that they never correct that . Never make that adjustment with a more comfortable stock or a more visible sight . Onve you get the sights where you can see them clearly and what your aiming at its as spot on as a scope use..

There is no law that says the front sight post has to "cover the target." HW's sight inserts are really designed for a "6 o'clock hold" on a target sight, where the top of the post aligns with the bottom of the black part of the target, like this:

In other words, the actual POI is above the post itself. You could adapt the same idea to anything else you happen to be shooting at.

And this very same subject is covered in this recent thread, which has many other good ideas:

I thought I was the only one that couldn't use the HW iron sights, everyone always raves about them. I have the same problem you have, can't see unless the target is well lit. I have a couple seeall sights that I use when I don't want to scope a gun, my vision is terrible now and these work with my progressive lenses.
