HW50s tuned down for mild power

My 30s is a .22 and shoots 8 fpe with my tune, I love it. It's not too loopy for me but I only shoot out to 32 yards with my springers.

Does your .22 HW30 remain nice and smooth at 8fpe? What pellet do you like to use at 8fpe. Thanks,

It's extremely smooth and quiet. It likes H&N FTT and CPHP, the poi is exactly the same for both but the FTT's group just a touch better. Here are some chrony numbers with a Vortek spring and seal.

I am pondering the idea of an HW50S .177 tuned down to about 9.5-10 fpe. I love my HW30 in .177 and thought that maybe just a "little more gusto" would make a nice plinker. I have an HW50s in .22 with a standard factory tune. It's "jumpy" and noisy compared to my HW30. Although it shoots really really well, it is not as much fun to shoot as the 30. I've never tuned a springer so it would be a project that required first finding a 50 in .177 and then sending the rifle to a quality tuner. Has anybody tuned down an HW50 to the 9-10 fpe range? How did it turn out? I envision a nice polite plinker similar to my HW30 but with just a bit more energy. Am I on the right track? Thanks,

If want a great tune, try Paul Watts. He'll tune your Hw50 to be as smooth as silk.

Thanks Frogy. Thanks for sharing your notebook. Those power levels are just about what I’m looking for; especially with the 10.34 pellets. Your rifle seems to shoot a bit low for a factory tune. Do you live at a bit of a high elevation?

Nope good old plains of IL. You had me wondering about my power. Factory up to 840. Went back and researched the many post about this Model. A people posting there fps I’d say I’m shooting right in the ball park I’ll recheck my numbers after another 500rounds. Thanks

I detuned my HW50S by cutting two coils off and refinished the end. It is a joy in the backyard. Actually just got it out as a change to the pcp world. I highly recommend this modification. Mine shoots the 7.9 crosman at 690 or so.

I just received my new HW50S in .20 caliber and to me it shoot smoothly and the cocking isn't bad at all and at my age that is very important. After reading so much about the HW50S binging much harder to cock than the HW30S I had made up my mind it that was so I'd just order a HW30S in .20 caliber, however I'm having no trouble with the cocking effect! And it shoot just fine and after sighting in I never missed a metal target or can. Charles.

Thank you. I have received a couple of recommendations for the 35. I suppose that it can also be tuned down to about 9 or 10 fpe. Then I can splurge and get the walnut stock as well. Good thought.

I think a lot depends on which make of spring you are using. Using my guns at well under 12ftlbs, 10ftlbs is about the average. I find that shooting at 30 yards I am unable to tell the difference in the time it takes the pellet to get to the target. Also 10ftlbs is plenty for small game like rabbits Pigeons and rats etc as long as you keep the distance reasonable say 30yds, perhaps more. People especially Newbies are so bothered about power.

It’s different and easier for me to load and just because At my age the .177 is just a little too hard for me to load, however I still enjoy shooting that caliber. Years ago I was a magnum shooter and enjoyed the big pb pistols and revolvers. As I’ve grown older they are not possible and now I’m just happy to be able to shoot the lower power guns.

Just buy a HW30S and leave the HW50S as is, as it's a great gun as is. Charles

I am knocking on a bit 82 and get a lot of fun out of target shooting with opens in my back garden. ( yard to you ) A yard over here is a small concreted area at the rear of the house.
