HW55 is the one

The HW55 is the gun I always wanted my R8 to be, and is probably my favorite airgun of all time. I never was able to shoot the R8 as well as I hoped, and the FWB300S that replaced it, though it is an accurate gun, is a whole lot of gun at 10 1/2 lbs. That is a lot of weight to handle without the support of a shooting coat. The HW55 is only 8 3/4 lbs with sleeve and is just more enjoyable for casual basement shooting in the winter. And although the 300S hangs on the target better, I can still get respectable results out of the HW55 if I take my time.

But it is more than just the fact that it is an accurate gun, it really seems to embody everything a quality target style springer was meant to be. Hard to describe, but fit and finish are perfect, and all the mechanicals are smooth and refined. Mine is doing about 580 fps with JSB Mediums, for almost exactly 6 ft-lb of energy. More than enough to punch clean holes, and with a very gentle shot cycle. My only regret is that I didn't acquire one sooner. HW should bring this one back as their heritage offering instead of the HW35E. The 35E is a pretty gun, but the 55 is a unique package with functionality that can't be found in any other springer made today.

Anyway, here is a picture of my HW55 with a homemade riser attached so I can shoot comfortably off the palm. The riser was supposed to be a prototype that I would duplicate in walnut, but it works as is so I doubt it will ever get upgraded. Also shown are a couple sample targets, one from tonight that I would consider typical, and my personal best shot back in January.

That's a pretty trio for sure - In addition to the stock variants, it looks like the top has no barrel sleeve, middle has the lighter barrel sleeve (400grams? 500grams?) and the bottom has the heavy barrel sleeve (900 or 1000 grams?).

I recently acquired one of these beauties myself with the heavy sleeve (thanks JC!), but have been so darn busy with work that I haven't been able to enjoy it yet, but I really like this platform. In the age of modern marketing, I can see why it was tough for Weihrauch to sell a gun (platform) that was bigger and more expensive than the HW30 but only made modestly more power. But now that I've been educated on the joys of lower-powered springers, I agree - it would be great to bring these back...but I doubt they'd sell many :(

Cripes...someone will think I’ve died, if I don’t respond to this post, LOL.

Top to bottom:

  • The odd HWB Champ junior rifle. 12” pull dimension, shortened barrel with sleeve, the adjustable-posiition trigger that Herr Weihrauch should put on all his rifles.
  • An HW 55M from the late 1970’s.
  • The rare-ish HW 55CM Custom Match. This is the only left-handed one I’ve ever seen.
  • An HW 55T, similar vintage to the M.
  • An HW 55S from the 1960’s. The rear diopter on this one is not OEM, and quite a bit older than the rifle.
  • One of the few HW 55’s with double-set triggers in captivity. This one is built around the 55’s original short breech block.

PS: my avatar pic is the first 55 I ever bought, a mid-80’s HW 55MM current toting an Anschutz sight.

You guys have a nice collection of the HW55 and some history. I was just looking for some info on the 55 after seeing a nice one on ebay listed as Beeman hw55mm. It looks a lot like the one in JohnL57's post. I'm not trying to sell it, just thought you HW55 guys might be interested. I had a FWB 300S several years ago and I've just got back into shooting recently. I got my first FWB 124 a couple months ago and it quickly become my favorite as I now have 3. I'm just looking for something new to try out and it'll probably be a Weihrauch. I was comparing an R8 with the HW55 when I found this and thought I'd give a heads up. It's hard to find nice older guns in really good condition.

Only three bidders though. One sniped at the end with a huge bid (1000$?) otherwise it would have sold for 670$. Was watching it end too

It was $440. when I made that post. I saw it was $670. before I went to work.

I watched that 300 Tyro go for $1825. at the last minute. That seller must have gotten someones collection of FWB's. They sold a bunch of FWB's and they were all very clean. I almost went for this..

Very nice condition but no rear sight... then they sold this FWB 124 with a 300S rear sight,

I got that one, I'd been thinking about trying that since my eyes can focus a lot better with a rear diopter / peep sight. I think the rear sight that's missing on that 300s is on my 124 and it works great. This is the only way I can use iron sights. I have two 124's with blue ribbon scopes and I'm going to keep this one set up with the rear diopter.
