Hi,

I have the HW97K which is a great springer, except its red safety pin which I do not like at all.
Recently after the airgun was cocked and ready to shoot, when I pressed the safety red pin,
it fired by itself !!! Scary. Luckily it was pointed on target. The trigger is factory and I haven't
tried to make it lighter. This happened only once but since then, I have stopped using it too
much.

How is this even possible?
Can anyone think of a scenario that this would happen?

Thanks.

The trigger did not reset, meaning the sear did not reengage. This allowed lever 2 to release lever 1 when the safety was pushed off (see link for diagram). Lever 3b did not reset when cocked. The mechanism could be dirty, gummy, or out of adjustment. All levers need to move freely, and there should be something on the order of 0.5mm engagement of the sear at the beginning of the second stage.

The safety catch has an internal spring that is greased at the factory. The grease hardens over time and sometimes the red paint from the catch starts coming off. Then the catch jams at cocking. Doesn’t allow a complete sear engagement. Remove the two pins and the trigger is out. Remove the safety catch and tiny spring. Clean both parts. Check for red paint. Grease the spring and reassemble. Done.

To clean the trigger mechanism I soak the entire assembly overnight in mineral spirits. Remove all loose dirt or grease residue, wipe/blow dry. Verify that all levers are moving freely. I then mix a few drops of light synthetic oil in just enough mineral spirits to cover the assembly, soak, then allow to dry. This leaves a light coat of oil on all parts to prevent corrosion and give a little lubrication. I also follow the Anschutz practice of putting a small amount of high quality synthetic grease on the sear engagement surfaces. This is to ensure that the sear resets fully if the trigger is pulled part of the way back but released before the gun fires.
