Tuning I think I've finally found a happy place - Taipan & 700mm CZ barrel

I just posted this to my facebook feed - copying & pasting in here too.

To those of you who may have purchased this barrel for this gun: At least for me, and my barrel, it really digs .217 sized slugs *UP TO* 23g in weight. If you want to sling anything heavier than 23g - try .216's. *DON'T ASK ME WHY* ( lol ) I've not a clue but after MUCH frustration I kind of accidentally discovered that .216's fly exceptionally well out of it (in heavier weights). At least one of the really good Jedi's in here alluded to me that I might try these too ( @mtnghost I'm thinking? ). So - long story short - for the time being I'm settling on the .216 27.5g NSA's. ( I picked up sample packs of the 27.5, 28.5 and 31.2's ) The 31.2's flew really well too but I'm thinking I might need a little more HS / need to use more air with those to get 'em up to a slightly faster speed. They flew good @923 but the group could have been a little tighter. Not changing the tune at all - I then tried the two lighter ones - the 28.5's were actually kind of a bummer. The 27.5's - holy crap - they were five shots touching grouping. Not the proverbial "hole on hole" - but dime sized at 40 yards. They were hands down the best of the three I tested. I'm still able to get 30 - maybe 35 shots out of them too from a 250bar fill @974fps. Not super efficient but not bad either I don't think. (?) So anyway - copy & paste in below of my fb post:

How about this weather 'eh?

Could it just stay like this through the end of March or so? So - super nice weather, me being curious like I can be and constantly dinking with stuff that didn't really need dinking with ( if it ain't broke . . . don't fix it ) BUT - you know. <grin> I wanted to get a little more power out of one of my .22 air rifles. A 700mm CZ barrel and a plenum magically showed up in the mail recently and so . . . re-tuning it to see if I could find happiness with a slightly heavier ammo that will fly further, buck the wind better and put the smack down on woodchucks next spring / summer. Check this - I've now got an *air rifle* putting out nearly 60 ft/lbs of energy in .22 cal. It's tough trying to get in any real time playing with it now due to lack of daylight so . . . I don't know that I'm going to be able to get it *really* dialed in like I had it before with the shorter OEM barrel but - it looks promising.

I hand wrote notes on the pic / target below which are pretty much self explanatory - once I figured out where I was initially hitting after the first two or three shots - I adjusted / dialed the scope and was then able to hit the target out at 101 yards at will. Easy peasy. Strelok (I misspelled it on the target) is a ballistics app that you can get from the google play / iTunes store. I'll have to figure out why that seems to be off - but . . . later when A) - I have ammo*, and B) - likely when it's spring time and the weather starts to improve again.

Link to info on strelok for those of you who might be curious as I know there are at least a few of you on my friends list who are shooters too.

*I purchased a couple of 40 shot sample packs of ammo in different weights / sizes to see if I could find something that the gun likes. I did - but used up all of the sample set in the process. Now that I know what its going to like - I'm going to buy a box or two for next year and further refining / tuning.

Regarding slugs >23gr, I found that the 700mm and 550mm CZ long barrels are identical (other than length). Other than some efficiency losses with the shorter barrels, their characteristics are the same.

I confirmed two things today: first, the 5.48mm Altaros slugs are WAY too small for the bore (despite Taipan's statement that they had great success shooting 3-4cm groups at 200mm with the 5.48mm). When I measured more of these, they are actually 5.47mm!!! Too damn small for these bores. By those standards, I think the 5.50mm would have been more appropriate.

Since I was tuned for 31gr already, I decided to try out some special 34gr Varmint Knockers (HP-FB) that Dale Riggert made for me to test out. They are in a harder lead alloy (BHN-7). The HP meplat diameter is kind of large. Good for hunting, not the best BC. They did shoot surprisingly well though.. much better than the 34gr Griffin BTs did with these barrels.

So in my assessment, 34gr are the largest that I have found to be compatible. I tested them from 934-978fps, and they grouped the same throughout that range (about an inch at 100y with moderate crosswinds).

The information on this forum is amazing! This is exactly the post I've been looking for...I own the .22 Vet Long *stock* (Made in Ukraine with the CZ barrel) and it's a tack driver with Hades @ 925 fps. It remains to be seen how far those pellets will fly accurately. To date I've only shot out to 40 meters where it grouped fairly well...BUT! My real goal is to shoot house sparrows off my bird feeder from 70 meters. That's a pretty lofty goal but with the accuracy that I've seen from this gun so far I know it has that potential. The question is really going to come down to how the Hades fly out to 75 meters. Oh, and then there's the wind...which we have a lot of here, btw. All of this is the reason that I've really been interested in building a *Sniper Edition* Taipan .22. I've got the 700mm CZ barrel, a power plenum, spacers to strengthen the HST if necessary, and a HUMA regulator all sitting on the fridge just waiting to be put to use. Oh, I almost forgot the NSA 23 grain pills in .2165-.2175. I kind've wish now that I had gone with the NSA 25 grain instead but we'll give these 23's a go. From what @jdanvers has said they should shoot well....the problem is that I'm having to much fun with this Taipan in stock form with the Hades!

Don’t sweat it or get caught up in some hype. When I got my Taipan .22 standard many years ago there was a tree that every kind of bird and squirrel liked at exactly 91 yards. With 18.1 pellets I shot more stuff off that tree than I can count. For at least 2 years of me owning the gun, the scope was zeroed at 91 yards and was only used to shoot stuff off that tree. My pellet speed with the 18.1’s was 905fps.
