I went to check out the raccoons body this morning, very strange

I drilled this guy last night with the Delta Wolf. He was across the ravine right by his den. 


I went out to check out my kill, and take pictures this morning. My Killzone was definitely messed with last night. I’m trying to figure out by what?

check out the chewed up foot. And the big cuts of meat that are just lying there. What cuts open the body, peels some meat out, doesn’t eat it, and chews on the leg? The meat on the leg does look kind of scarred over.

Had the leg been caught in a trap at some point? That guy was a problem waiting to happen.

The last picture was of a stump, that had two dead squirrels lying on it for about the last month. They disappeared last night. I thought it was a strange coincidence.

I bet it was someones dog, a wild animal wouldn't waste a kill unless the meet was bad.

I had that same thing happen to a raccoon I shot! Something came and ripped the entire intestines out through the entry wound! I have video of the kill on my thermal scope, and I know for certain it was not thrashing around enough to lose its entire intestine.

There must be something that's getting into these kills before we retrieve them!

@flintsack What type of animals eat carrion in your region in that weather? Did you see any other tracks around? Any dog tracks? Are you able to mount a trail cam close to the area to monitor activity?

Could be possum. I have left squirrels out at night and my trail cam picked up a possum chewing on them.

My guess would also be a possum. Set up a deer cam after a kill and you will get you answer.

Skunk? They love squirrels and other carrion too!

Flintsack do you have closeup pictures of the tracks around the racoon ? Also with the stump and squirrels, that would of been a good time to have a trail cam on that tree right behind that stump. You may have better luck on those racoons buy hanging a can of sardines about 2 feet above ground level on a tree in your shooting direction.

Mr. Flintsack, what part of the state do you live in? I'm in central MN and have spotted a fisher on my property. They look like a large cat. Their primary habitat is northern/eastern MN.

The cameras are out. The tracks are horrible this time of year, the snow is melting. Last night it would’ve been frozen solid. Plus, there are a zillion tracks. Plus pennies tracks. Plus the raccoons. It’s a freaking zoo.

two skunks came in for hotdogs tonight. I’ll expand more on that in my other post if you’re interested.

Thanks for sharing your pest stories. Lots of action for you to deal with Mike! I’m getting ready to deal with the spring skunks, any day now it’s going to start. It’s a pain in the butt because they hole up under my shop.

It’s a race to get them before they have their litters lol!

At first, I thought it might have been coyotes, as my neighbors have seen some around. But more than likely it was possums, as a coyote would have just tried to drag the whole raccoon body away.

There is no way a squirrel last overnight in my residential neighborhood. The local fox(s) clean them up quick. They don't seem to like Grackles, though. I have witnessed a hawk taking the squirrels, three times, during daylight hours.

Scavenger birds like ravens, crows, buzzards, etc. will eat the intestines like that but they tend to go for the eyes first. Curious. Like to know the answer to this riddle.
