I went to my first bench rest match yesterday

I shot and the Holbrook Sportmans Club in, well, Holbrook Ma. I was Meeting Dan Brown there to pick up my freshly repaired AA S500. I shot rested on bags, the other guys with their fancy mechanical rests and dedicated bench rest rifles certainly were something to see. Here's a pic of my best card:
 
25 yards indoors and dead last. My S500 is a field target gun, on sand bags, the rest of the guys were using dedicated bench rest rifles, all RAW either TM or BM models with fully adjustable mechanical front rests. Anyways I'm pretty dedicated to field target but will continue to attend the bench rest matches if only to increase trigger time.

Going up against some of the best must have been a thrill. They really know their marksmanship at Holbrook. Shooting a 243 at your first match is an accomplishment to be proud of. I know how tough it can be. When I go to matches, I shoot off of sandbags and a standard stock too.
I read on another forum that the winning score for the match was a perfect 750. Quite a monumental score indeed. Did Mark Normandin shoot the same rifle for light varmint and heavy varmint? The report mentioned that he was using a TM1000.

Thanks Mike, and yes, I'll be back to shoot it again. Yes Mark used the same action but two different stocks. I've already ordered a bubble level for my rifle as I know more than a few shots were off because of cant. I was also looking at the rules and classes a bit and am pretty sure my rifle qualifies for the production class, though i don't know if that applies to indoor shooting. I'll have to ask Paul Bendix at the next match to make sure.

Good deal! Everyone should get to some type of match (personally Filed Target changed my airgun life). Run what ya brung, stay safe and learn SO much first hand, well worth a long drive if needed. Also after meeting over 200 airgun folks at different shoots in the last few years, there is something about folks who enjoy airguns, just as close to 100% good people as you can get.
Also, thank you for sharing, and thanks for the picture (more would be nice though).

Thank you John, and Dick. John, I started shooting field target last year and even found my way to the Nationals in Al. I think did alright, placed 7 or 8 in my class(hunter) and middle of the pack overall. My goal this year is to place 5th or better in hunter and try for top 1/3 to 1/4 overall at the Nationals in NC. I'll try for some pics during next months match. I'm also attending a field target match on the 18th in salem ny so I will certainly have some pictures from that.

Nice shooting John. You have nothing to feel bad about. Using your FT rifle against the dedicated BR rifles and adjustable front rests, I d say you did damn good using a bag! Keep at it and you will get the tricks down. We are gearing up for this years FT matches. I and some friends at the THAGC club are hitting some of the Grand Prix circuit starting with the Cajun Classic in March. We were going to go to the Heflin Al match, but it is cancelled. The Pyramid cup and possibly a Grand Prix by our club is in the works as well as the Nationals in Michigan. Hope to see you again at one of those. Oh yeah....don't be stingy with the beverages this time....LOL Only kidding.

One of our members you met at the nationals Chris (in the camo outfit in your pic I posted on the Yellow) and I are working on a new place for FT matches. Chris approached his powder gun club and they graciously are allotting an area in the woods for the matches. We already made the main path and will be making the lanes in a week or two. There is also a covered metal pole bench rest structure with metal framed bench rests we can use after we clear some small pine saplings from in front on the berm hill. Perfect for BR comps when finished... Mabey we can get you to come on down south to shoot some....

Fist off, I will bring a few more beverages this time. Good hearing that another Air Rifle range could be going up. I will certainly be at the Pyramid Air Cup, Nationals and the Crosman event so that's three GP's for me. Of course there are three more two day shoots planned here in the North East but they may not draw enough shooters to meet the GP requirements, but we'll see. Either way I've got a good bit of FT to shoot for this next season.

John, We are holding our winter match this coming Saturday in Mt Pleasent NC. I will be attempting my first pistol competition there. I was going to use a Crosman 1720T pistol but I cannot get as steady with it as I want. Too bad, as it is laser accurate. Unfortunately I am not!.....lol
However, I have a Brocock Aim X I bought this winter from a yellow member. THAT, I can get steady with....It's a.22 and only gets 10 on target shots until it goes high and rt from the curve. Not an issue if I keep it at 10 pellets then refill. i am going to get a regulator for it after this match....

When is the Crosman event and is it in NY? Hope we can get together to share some beverages at the events..We will bring extras too!!

Crosman is July 8-10 being held at the Rochester Brooks Gun Club in NY. The shoot is great, and the discounts on crosman goods is even better. I got a 1720T for 215 and sold it for 340. Pistol is fun, granted I've only shot it once and that was at nationals this past fall but I'm thinking I'll have a hunter pistol rig set up for the GP events. Good luck with your shoot this weekend.
