Yes the threads were stripped away, I had a new nut and reversed threaded hoping to revive any old threads but no joy. This is where the challenge began.
As noted and indicated the late model guns do have an insert, however this old girl does not as she is a pre-war model. Knowing this I took the time to only create new threads in an area the extends 1 or 2 threads into the transfer port. This was done to assure I had the correct threads and alignment for the compression tube and air chamber on the tube side. Thus my fix is similar to what you describe. In addition, the initial test fit indicates all will work well and will seal up as if there was never a thread issue when tightened.
