FX Impact M3 valve adjuster hitting barrel shroud

Hello Nation,

Just purchased a new .22 Impact M3 and was going through all the basics and setting up the rifle. When attempting to adjust the valve adjuster, I noticed that the valve adjuster was hitting the barrel shroud, making it impossible to open passed 3.5 lines. This is my first PCP so I’m still learning everything. What do I need to adjust in order to move the shroud away from the valve adjustment knob?

Wouldn't an M2 VA knob work? They are slimmer that the ones on the M3's, so may be?
Just a suggestion, maybe someone has already offered?

Yes someone has suggested that and maybe it would. I can’t find it online. If someone has a link to a direct replacement let me know. At this point it’s just something I’ll have to live with. I think the real way to fix it is by shortening the shroud, which would probably require a lathe. Maybe I’ll figure it out some day.

Yeah I’m gonna go the opposite direction. I’ll take chronograph reading with the VA as far out as it will go and then turn in 1/4 turn to see if speed drops and go from there.
Turns out it works fine for what I’m doing. I’m only shooting Hades 15.89g and the valve adjuster worked to pull my speed back from 940 down to around 925 just like I wanted. I guess if I was shooting slugs or heavier ammo I may need more adjustment on the valve, but slinging these Hades into iguana at 925 is right where I wanted to be 👍

I would get FX to fix it. BTW there is a dealer here in west palm beach that might be able to help. (Palm Beach Airguns) 561 600-9618
I bought it from PB airguns and when I called they really didn’t offer much help. I was hoping they would swap it with another shroud or something but he also said it probably wouldn’t affect my shooting, which it looks like it doesn’t. I’m only at about 3 1/4 on the overall power setting and the valve pulled me down from 940 fps to 925ish so I guess all is well.

Oh no, that wouldn't cut it with me I would return it.

If my valve adjustment knob knocked an instant 15fps off my plateau reg speed, I’d fix it or get it fixed. Here’s why. You paid for a feature with this gun that you can’t use. Can you live with it? Yes, but why. Your gun is now basically a one trick pony. Once you change reg pressure and the hammer setting to try to find the peak plateau speed, where the valve knob starts to work changes. So you could drift even further off into the unknown. I have seen it way too often that we love our toys so much that we won’t part with them long enough to even just have them fixed. But you bought a highly tunable/adjustable gun that is not highly tunable/adjustable.

Yes it is. Whatever headroom I’m missing by not being able to fully open the valve is honestly probably not making much of a difference at all. That’s quite dramatic to say say it’s not highly adjustable/tunable. I have it shooting exactly the way I want, and I can figure out where the plateau is if I remove the shroud if I really wanted to. I’m shooting with a standard deviation of less than 2 with an extreme spread of 8 and shooting exactly at my target velocity. It’s not THAT serious. I’d like to fix it but the gun is perfect with or without that extra valve adjustment.

Seeing as how this is your first PCP, I can see how you feel it’s not THAT serious. If it’s doing what you want, enjoy it. But when or if you decide to start exploring other projectiles, you’ll want to fix the issue.

Being that it is my first pcp (of which I have gotten more) I can tell you that it is NOT an issue for this guns usage case. This is to hunt iguana and it does a damn good job with that. This is a compact, lightweight build that shoots amazingly. Who would buy a compact 22 caliber if they wanted to shoot heavy projectiles at greater speeds? If I wanted to do that I’d buy a barrel kit anyways which would come with a new shroud. I’m really not dumb enough to chase speed or try to shoot overweight projectiles out of this, which I’m sure it would shoot fine anyways.

Im at 105 bar on rear reg and get around 90+ shots per fill at 925 fps with the exact ammo I intended to use. It’s honestly a non issue for my use. If I wanted to shoot higher speeds or heavy slugs I’d get a barrel kit.

No idea why this is an issue for you if it isn’t for me.

Well I have the exact same gun but I shoot a 25gr slug and I’m not pushing the gun hard at all. I need the full use and range of the valve adjuster when I start a tune. Hope that helps.
Not sure how that helps much at all, but I’m happy for you. I’ve already gotten a few suggestions and advice on a fix, but in a .22 shooting 15-18g pellets, it’s not as big of a deal as I thought it was. If it becomes an issue I will fix it, and I thank the people who have made valuable contributions to the thread and didn’t make it about airing out their own grievances 👆

Good grief. Was gonna offer to cut your shroud and rethread it like I did mine but if you want to point fingers at someone who’s trying to help by spinning what I’ve said into airing grievances, so be it. The gun will still serve you well with your current tune.

You could have opened with that. It took quite a while for you to mention you can do that. If I had just stopped answering you 5 messages ago you would have never offered it anyways.

So are you going to keep that to yourself now? Why wouldn’t you offer that 10 messages ago?

You sent me a handful of messages about how I will want to fix it in the future and all kinds of stuff about how I can’t possibly tune it right. Why wouldn’t you have offered to do this hours ago?

You told me my gun was a one trick pony. Why wouldn’t you just offer to help me if you have the ability? Very confusing. I have 6 replies from you since yesterday and you never once offered to cut my shroud?

Just had to be sure you were actually having an issue worth the shipping it here and then back. Remember, on page one you didn’t even know how to take off a shroud. I was also debating having you check what spring is in there. There have been cases where Impacts came with the wrong spring in there and that affects the operating range of the knob. But I have a feeling from your info that the right spring is in there. But you seemed to be content with how it’s performing, have a game plan for longer barrels and wanted to argue with why I think it’s important that it works. Was just getting a feel for who I might do a free favor for.

That was months ago, first of all. And the issue was clear then, and I have clarified the issue to you multiple times since then. You told me this is my first PCP, told me my gun was a one trick pony, and told me all kinds of stuff about your guns and your experiences, but never once offered to help me.

That’s very weird that you’d go through all of that to determine if you wanted to do a free favor for me, gotta be honest. Again, if you had the ability to help me you could have offered before playing some weird game of “do you deserve it”. Real nice.

I know why it became an issue for me and it wasn’t an issue originally. I changed my seating depth with this barrel. I just can’t figure out why it’s an issue with your stock gun. A Maverick compact shroud is way too long for an Impact compact. Makes me wonder if they didn’t have a bad run of them that were just a quarter inch too long. I’m not a business. I get to choose who I’ll do work for. You can call it a game if it makes you feel better. I just prefer to do things for people who would really appreciate it. Those shroud internal threads are not fun.
