What do you use for inletting black? Lamp? Make your own? Recipe? Buy it?

Presuming that what I’m inletting for is metallic, I have used the soot from a candle flame with great success. Hold the item just into the flame and it will be covered with soot. Repeat as necessary.

I use blue chalk….not because I think it’s great…I just have a lot left over from boat planking. Works fine..my Dad used old red lipstick…

I bought a small container years ago of actual inletting black from track of the wolf (iirc). I still have over half the container left and have done several locks, barrels and receivers. It works the best imo but I’ve used candles, sharpies and the like as well for when I just need a quick indicator.
