Interesting moderator problem with Avenger

I purchased an Avenger .22 from Alhenry on the classifieds here and am very happy with it. (I want to get a wood stock for it but that's for another thread.)

The Avenger is not terribly loud but loud enough that I wanted to try a moderator on it. I ordered the DonnyFl extender adapter from Pyramyd:

I screwed in the adapter and threaded on a Buck-Rail moderator from another gun I have; just to try it out. Sound wise, it was impressive. The gun was so quiet - but, unfortunately the shots were all over the place. I thought it must be the can, so I put it back on my other gun and it still works just fine. I even bored out the moderator with a 1/4 inch drill bit. Still no good.

Out of curiosity I fired a shot with the adapter in but no moderator screwed on. It was very very loud but the poi went back to normal. It's strange to me that I get fine groups with the same moderator on another gun but on the Avenger it really messes things up. I put the factory end cap with baffles back in and am using it in stock formation for now.

I intend to buy a moderator specifically for this Avenger but am now wondering if I will have this same issue. Any thoughts?

Thanks for any ideas.

Drilling it out to 1/4" provides only 0.016" clearance for the pellet if all the pieces were perfectly centered, which they never are. For perspective, 16 thousandths is about the thickness of 3 or 4 sheets of copy paper. You will almost certainly need to enlarge it further, but if you are sufficiently tenacious and analytical, you can investigate how all of the parts fit together and see if there are any large sources of non-concentricity that you can mitigate first.

It's always advisable to buy one caliber up for a moderator but, that being said, try putting a small o-ring around the base of threads on the adapter. Don't overtighten the moderator when you put it on, just snug against o-ring. See if it works for you, does for me.
I've seen that advisory, so why don't they size up one to begin with and properly put the caliber label as such. If I get a moderator that is caliber marked, just appears better to have the caliber it actually is as the label. On a side note, it seems the recommendation might follow moderators that attach directly to the threads on the barrel compared to threaded shroud adapters around the barrel?

All 3 of my guns have adapters & I've used the o-ring for about 6 years now. Didn't originally do it for alignment purposes really, just to keep metal on metal from galling & to keep the moderator from loosening up but found it helps with alignment.
