A marksman competition consisting of 100yd Benchrest, 100yd off hand and hunting simulation, Luftgewehr Schützenverein uses an airgun adapted ruleset in conjunction with the traditional 2 sided 25 ring targets and off-hand shooting. The original discipline’s roots date back to the mid 1500’s and goes well into American history, and more specifically to the formation of Boerne, TX and many other Texas towns. And to this day massive Schützenfests are still held in Germany, Switzerland, the Netherlands!
The role of Schützenvereins had adapted over time, starting as town militias and morphing into social epicenters for new forming towns such as Boerne in the 1860’s. It was a place for families to gather, share food and for the best marksmen to try and one up one another and hope to be crowned Schützenkönig.
At Boerne’s original location in town, it was a 200yd offhand shoot with open sights; Schützen is not for the faint of heart and meant to be a test of skills. As times progressed, supports were added as an offhand supplement and Benchrest components were added to the shoot by some clubs. Pace of fire and number of shots is also significantly slower and also represented in the airgun adaptation. But slow and few shots are not always the norm, some traditional shoots use a wooden target that is all but eliminated using as many shots as needed. Others have certain target areas like the heart head and lungs of a representative wooden bird where shooters would win for hitting the vitals or for decapitation. Sounds oddly like field target, which is exactly why 100fpe field targets will be used as the König targets! And following the traditions, we will begin the shoots with a proper German breakfast.
As always, we try to do a ‘dry run’ and April 13th will be the date at Nein o clock. Many people will be at the Cajuns and best of luck to y’all! Prob best us JV shooters hang back and work out the kinks so to speak so May is smooth sailing.
Please see the attached ruleset for times, dates and menu!
Thanks for reading and please let me know if you have any questions!
May God bless Texas and all things airgun.
