Invited to dance with a 25 Delta Wolf at Rio Salado…

I received an inmail message through Airgun Nation from Robert, the owner of AoA. He wanted to chat. So we connected.

In a very straightforward manner, he asked me if I would like to shoot a Delta Wolf. He then asked if he could send me one. It was a difficult decision…lol.

I offered to come out and pick it up because I figured the first date with the D-Wolf should be at Rio Salado. I’ve heard so much about it. I had just accepted a new job and I had a week off. Flights were under $200 from Minneapolis. Rock ‘n’ roll.

My buddy Dan, XS ultimate, was able to get me set up on Rio Salado, through a friend of his named Chris who we shot with for two days. Chris and a buddy had dueling Thomases going at 50 yards. There was a lot of laughing and smiling taking place. It was of course quite windy, especially earlier in the day. Later on it got better, still windy but more consistent.

What an awesome trip. The morning I left home it was 15° below zero in Minnesota. Do you think that’s a good day to leave for Phoenix?

I went straight to a airguns of Arizona. Lauren Parsons had everything ready. She handed me off my new rifle, showed me how to use it quickly, and then invited me out for an evening shoot, of course at Rio Salado.

this allowed me to cite in the rifle get used to it a little bit, so I could be ready to shoot in the morning. Lauren was of course practicing shooting her awesome FT rifle. She let me take one shot. I shot it at a spinner at 50 yards, offhand. She recommended two kill zones of wind. I held approximately 2 inches left. And scored a hit and reset the entire target 🎯 …It is an awesome Rifle. I’m switching to my red wolf for field target. I made that decision months ago. Shooting her rifle just reinforced it. Obviously there’s some magic in her rifle if it allows me to hit a 1 1/2 inch circle offhand, in 2 inches of wind, at 50 yards. What a treat! There was no way I was going to even think about taking another shot…

I shot the Delta Wolf offhand at 50 yards at a gopher field target. I hit him in the Killzone offhand three out of four times. And then whacked him right in the forehead on purpose. It was like shooting a laser..Full disclosure, I was kind of leaning against a post. Not the rifle but my side.

By the way. I don’t like black rifles. I don’t like plastic. And I don’t like black metal on rifles…I also don’t like bull pups. And I definitely don’t like magazines.

All of the above is why I currently don’t own either an impact or a Delta Wolf.

but I love my red wolves. And I love the electronics, I love the power, and I love the electronic trigger. So the chance to get a shot at the new more advanced a Delta Wolf… I guess I would have to put up with a bull pup! I just hoped I could single load it, which I did not expect to be able to do. I’ve always felt that rifles should have a Wood stock, they should be long and svelte. To my eyes, the Delta Wolf is just not that pretty… until you’re sitting behind it looking through the scope. I brought a little March 2.5 to 25 with me to mount on the rifle.

In the morning I was approaching hallowed ground. Possibly the most famous Airgun Range in the world.

It was really windy. Pushing the pellets 6 to 8 inches at 100 yards, a foot at times. I decided to see what I could do at 75 yds. I started out shooting the 34 grain mark 2s

75 yard groups:

I was quite pleased and encouraged, so I decided to move out to 110 yards. Going from 75 to 100 is a BIG difference…Going from 75 to 110 is Brutal!

The range is literally scooped out of the desert. It’s very intimidating. Especially when the flags are standing straight across in different directions. And your pellets are moving anywhere from 6 to 10 inches depending on constant changes.

The 110 yard groups.

The groups just above ALL have six shots (except the 10 shot group). all of them were blown up by shot number five. The number five shot doubled the size of each group. This happened three times. Each time I went back and shot number six right back into the original group. And keep in mind these misses are a half an inch at 110 yards in heavy winds. But I could’ve certainly shot a screamer numerous times. Candidly, it was a blast.

The target below is four groups shot in a row. One was six shots. Again, I was very impressed. I was holding 6 to 8 inches of wind on every shot.

it started getting a bit calmer in the evening. It was still windy. It was still moving the pellets 4 to 7 inches at 110 yards.

I was running low on the mark 2 34s, So I decided to switch to Kings. I left it on the same setting which was designed for the 34 grain to shoot at 900…So the kings were shooting at 995. And they were magic. I was not able to shoot for very long in the better conditions with the kings, because A youth shooting organization had the range at 6 o’clock.

25g Kings 110 yards:

The first two groups are the first three shots of two different groups. Basically two little tiny cloverleafs at 110 yards. Watching the pellet fly into that hole again and again was really something.

The group above is 10 shots at 110 yards in the wind.

Three times I had three shot cloverleafs. That tells me that the potential accuracy is superb.

watching the flight of the kings through the air was phenomenal. It was beautifully true with no curls, and watching them dive into the hole was cool.

Yes it was great fun! Me with D-Wolf

Think about this. The number of settings that I can set up on this rifle are pretty much infinite. I tried one setting, for one day. More to come!

Too tired to proof anymore, so please excuse any typos.

Jake,

in my experience the kings will almost always shoot smaller groups in better conditions. I will easily shoot a quarter inch group at 100 yards with this rifle in the next week or two with the kings.

It was later in the day and conditions were better when I was shooting the kings.

In the wind, and in the long-haul, Harry’s 34 grain pellet is going to shoot smaller overall groups, more consistent.

The kings were being pushed by the wind significantly more than the heavies. I would say 50% more. So if the king was shooting 6 inches left, the 34 heavy would be shooting approximately 4 inches left in the same condition.

I also found it interesting that the king flying 100 ft./s faster, has almost has the same POI as the 34.

I valiantly tried to make it there for the XFT match, timing was just too crunched. Plus the ticket was 600 more, 200 versus 800.

All that said, I am planning to come back in the next couple months and will time it around your EFT match.

I was actually shooting all day with two of the top three from that match….

I’m not sure who I want to meet more, you or your rifle. Surely…you won’t take that the wrong way.

Bob,

I’m sure you can tell reading my post I was impressed with the rifle. Way more than I expected to be. My reticence was really driven by the bull pup - all metal design of the rifle.

Because air guns need longer barrels for increased efficiency and velocity, it would appear that the bull pup design is here to stay. So this week, I decided to embrace the D wolf and see what it could do.

To say the conditions we’re difficult for me would be a vast understatement. I’m simply not used to shooting in bad conditions, I’m spoiled. Back in the day, before I had my sheltered range, I shot in the wind all the time. That muscle memory definitely came back to me on this trip.

The new electronic rifles are so vastly superior to any thing else we have ever had before, frankly, it’s just mind-boggling.

I also believe we are just scratching the surface of what these gnu devices are capable of. (i’m going to leave the gnu in there, I get tired of fixing the auto type errors - what’s a gnu? Was supposed to be new, lol).

When I started playing with the various settings on my red wolf, and was able to dial slugs in at 200+ yards I was blown away.

The fact that the D wolf creates a feedback loop for the system, starts to look and act very much like AI for airguns. As far as I know, there’s no other system out there that actually receives feedback from a built-in chronograph and uses that intelligent information to provide a better shot cycle the next time you pull the trigger.

Now I just need to figure out a way to hang some wood on it, warm it up a bit. I’m thinking a Koa cheekpiece probably would help a bit.

I really did not expect to like it…I don’t like black rifles. As I mentioned previously I don’t like metal and paint, and I really didn’t think electronics belonged on a rifle before I received my red wolves…now I gnu better!

A few more targets I shot, when I was trying to not only shoot a group, but shoot it at the center of the target 🎯. Some of them are 6 shots.

The top group has a bit of a story. First I shot three shots in a row in a little bug eye. I was excited. I shot two more shots, and could not see where they hit on the target, I was frustrated. If I were back home I would’ve just walked out. Instead I shot one more shot just to see what was going on. That’s the one down below.

110 yds with Kings Wind was 4-6”. Yes I shot the targets sideways, they were already mounted. The orange dots are the same size as the EBR target

Good shooting with the .25 Delta Wolf. I’ve had mine for almost a year and it’s a great gun. Mine likes the King Heavy better than the Mk2. Haven’t tried the Kings since I’m always shooting in windy conditions.
I didn’t know you knew Tony, Barb, and Peykan who finished 1-2-3 at the most recent XFT match at PRGC? Hopefully you can come shoot with us one day soon. It’s the 4th Saturday each month and the March event will be a two day GP style event.
Looking forward to more long range shooting posts with the .25 Delta Wolf.
Mike

Edit: I think maybe the two of top three comment was among the four that shot rimfire. My bad, I was thinking of the twenty that shot pellet.

Yes CC, you are right that it was the rimfire guys, Mike Smith was there with his slug Thomas and I was there shooting a variety of pellet rifles. Chris Peet was also there so the Phoenix area shooters were pretty well represented. I hadn't shot my 25 for awhile and it was fun to shoot it again. As Mike mentioned the wind was pretty tough, probably 15 mph with 25 to 30 mph gust on Friday. I have known Flintsack for a few years and you can't find a better guy or better shooter. I should be mad at him as he kind of started me down the road of collecting quality air rifles and long range shooter. I think I probably have bought about 10 rifles from flintsack.

Flintsack, It was very nice to meet you face to face after all the communications we have had over the last few years. You do have the skills to shoot and shoot well. I'm really looking forward to see what magic can come from the DW!!!!!! See you next time!

Thx

Dan

I know Mike had a great time and it was fun hearing the highs and lows from him while shooting. He was laughing and giggling about how well the Delta Wolf was shooting, then you would hear the short WOW, when the wind took the shot out of the same hole! 😁 Ups and downs but I doubt that he really had any lows with a smile like that on his face!

$600 more, yeah that would be hard to part with!...

Nope I don't take it the wrong way, lol.

See you in a few months hopefully.
