Iron/open sight spring gun contest for pellets?

I’m thinking about offering pellets as prizes for best group at longer various ranges with .177 springers using iron sights only.

Possibly scopes, guns as prizes. Depends on how many are interested and wish to participate.
No entree fee, no BS. Must be judged on honor system. So much has been canceled.
I’m not a traveler but I wouldn’t mind doing this at home.

Thinking of starting at 40 yards. Any interest?

Well I fully understand old eyes so we can add scopes.
I’m just doing this for fun and to show what a springer can do.
All input is welcome and I don’t have to run it.

I’m about to film some open sight groups at 41 yards. I’ll probably upload it later; but I don’t edit anything so some stuff is long and boring. The only plus I see is nobody can say it’s faked.
It’s all for fun and I’m offering free JSB 8.44’s for 1st trial.
Let’s see where it goes, yay?

No .22 springers? Bummer. Just got a .22 Diana 54 with peep sights.

(Subscribing anyway!)

Well I planned on adding them in at a certain range. Or doing in their own class and comparing. Maybe even a .25

I suggest adding SSP's since they are usually 6fps. Heck any 6fpe gun, rifle or pistol, even if a PCP. They'll probably have an accuracy advantage but the wind will take that attribute away.

Might as well have a scoped division and a iron sight division.

Maybe a stock class division, no mods done to the gun at all.

Eh it's just for fun anyway right, but it would be cool to see how they all compare at 40Y.

I’m okay with all of that. I do think a SSP & a tuned, scopes gun have an advantage but yes, it’s not a big serious competition so we can start with .177 from anything if you fellas wish.
All I ask is honesty in describing conditions of gun, your age/eyes, pellets, etc.

The main point is fun and to show that pellets are incredible from a good gun & shooter.
Thank you all & keep ideas coming

Ok if tomorrow at 1st light isn’t windy I’ll shoot my John Thomas tuned HW30 7ftlb on 2x with 8.44 JSB @ 41 yards.

My John in Pa tuned 48 with iron sights at 41 with Crosman 10.5’s.

All my spring guns except for the Walther LGV .177 are tuned by JIPA.

I thought about son shooting in one of the (4) 600’ chicken houses. But those fans move 1100sqcf of air a minute to remove ammonia so chicks don’t die from that or overheating.

You’re fine YO!, we’re going to allow any spring or gas ram, any SSP, MSP.

Heck I don’t care what you use as long as your honest about the gun, sights or scope, pellets, distance.

I don’t think a mechanical rest is fair but if you’re disabled and need one you may but the pellet prizes are going to be restricted to the best group from a Spring/Gas ram. Otherwise this shouldn’t be in this section.

My main goal is to get you guys something to do since comps have been canceled as of now. Honor system rules.
I’m about to start at 40/41 yards. I sit at 41 yards, muzzle length reading is 40.

Where is everybody? I was rushing to get a couple targets shot before the light went away. So here is my entry in the open sights class. Sticks are allowed aren't they? And what is a mechanical rest? This is difficult, no doubt. I have trouble mostly with the vertical alignment. Gun was my week old FWB Sport fitted with its stock open sights. Distance was 42 yards to the seat. Final target is on the left. Right target was shot just before. Shooting for groups, right? Because I didn't have time to do more than get the group reasonably centered.

I’m gonna ask Flintsack or others to help in judging and all rules. I’m happy/sad to see him here as I doubt anyone will beat him if his groups at 100 with .177’s are as good as they used to be. Lol. I’m only happy, just kidding ya.

On the left side group above, I am asking for clarification as to what type of open sights. I had said diopter is okay but no magnification lenses. If you did that 5 shot group with 0.60” & 0.30” common notch & blade open sights, wow & congratulations.
We can set a deadline for weekly entries. Not everyone can do a daily or has good weather, time, etc.

I would also suggest that you keep trying before you enter as it’s gonna be one entry per distance/caliber. The sight in side is okay.

A mechanical rest is like a sled but fully adjustable in super fine increments. They make a 1/8 moa or 1/10 mill adjustment look like a huge adjustment. So they aren’t allowed. Any way you want otherwise is fine. Rested on a bag, prone, bucket & sticks, hood of pick-up truck, or my favorite fantasy, J-Lo’s behind. Much nicer than my cut off jeans with rice and zip ties. With my luck she’d break wind as I’m about to break the 2nd stage to master sear & cause me to pull the shot. Lol.

The entire point is just to start with.177’s at 20 to 40 yards and work out to as far as any competitors wish to continue taking them.
I shot this, 5 total, 3 horrible hits, at 135 yards Was done 2 weeks ago just to see if I could even get anywhere close. I used a junk 4x zeroed at 97 yards. I increased HS, used heavier JSB 13.43 Monster originals and took 5 shots from a modified non regulated or tethered Maximus with Marauder trigger group and 2700psi fill due to Magnum Air Grade 8+ valve screws. Tensile strength batch was 196K so I think 2700psi is okay. This got me thinking about a .177 springer contest due to guys being at home bored.

Not an entry. Just saying fun for long range plinking. It was windy and I just kept aiming for top right hand corner.

I have hit Coke cans at 130 yards offhand with a tuned .22 R1 using hold over but I couldn’t ever call anything a group

Is this the best group you can shoot, or just one group?

and I do think we need a little more clarity on using a benchrest or not? Or is this FT positions?

mike

Hello there Mike!

I was thinking it would be one group per entry. Maybe as long as 6 days to shoot then enter by Sunday. New distances or bigger caliber start that Monday, and winner announced Monday also?.?. IDK just trying to gauge interest at this point as lots of guys will just pass my posts over.
I’d like it to be a contest that shows .177’s are good for much further than most think.
I totally understand not being able to see as well as we all once did. But trust me on this one.
I use refined factory open sights and just keep shooting from a porch rail at the same point of aim. I can’t even see where I’m hitting or holes. But if there’s no wind and you’re breaking consistently you will be amazed at what you didn’t think that gun, or you can do.

Mike, all FT positions would be allowed. I don’t own a true solid level bench rest.

I consider my porch rail with a bag of dried rice under forestock as being a “Bench Rest” as in, no way I could have done that offhand. Bipods are bench rested in my eyes. Though I don’t know anyone nor have I ever shot a spring gun from a bipod. Do you hear me Hatsan? It’s STUPID. And it would get in the way of cocking your gun

I’m not so sure I want to allow 6 days, enter by 7th & start next phase as that’s gonna lead to very very close calls that I’m not willing to send out 10 tins to 10 different winners.

Mike, if you, anyone that has that computer pixel group measuring system that measures CTC, subtracts the caliber diameter and gives the tightest group to the 4th or 5th decimal point, then that’s the best judge.

If it’s an app I can download on my iPhone then I gladly will.

Let’s toss some ideas & rules of engagement around here, and start practicing.

I’m offering JSB 8.44’s. If anyone wants to add prizes great but I respectfully decline any prize if I’m donating & judging.

James, I was using the sights that came with the gun, a hooded post front sight and this little beauty at the rear:

I did this just for fun, so no prizes needed. BTW, my understanding of the terminology is that there are two types of metallic (iron) sights, open and aperture.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iron_sights

For the aperture sight entry I was going to use my 300s on a bipod since that is my standard pesting rig. But if bipods are not allowed I will have to come up with something else.

And thanks for hosting this, it should be fun.
