Is baiting really hunting?

Many years ago I thought that legal baiting was a good idea. I carefully studied what my prey would eat and how to properly place the bait. I would even make sure my scent was not on any of the bait. I became very good at this.

I was a master baiter.

ROFLMAO!

You sir, are an inspiration to us all!

LOL!!! Even with bait rats are hard to shoot they are so wary, and it's even tougher to get it on video.

I am a Master Baiter as well.

Ground squirrel eat filberts in the orchards and THAT IS THE BAIT.

Starlings eat the food for the cows at the dairy and THAT IS THE BAIT.

Texas Parks and Wildlife says Baiting is Hunting. I think I'll take their word for it rather than heed any opinion from people who think w/ their feelings instead of using logic and reason.

Lawful Means and Methods
It is legal to bait for game animals, nongame animals, and upland game birds, except for Eastern turkey and migratory game birds. (Baiting is unlawful on most public property. Please check specific regulations for that public property.) :

Air Guns and Arrow Guns
Alligator, game animals, furbearers, squirrels, and non-migratory game birds (except eastern turkey) may be hunted with air guns ... squirrels, pheasant, quail, and chachalaca may be hunted with air guns that fire a projectile of at least .177 caliber (4.5mm) in diameter producing a muzzle velocity of at least 600 feet per second.

So, if I want to set up a bait station in my backyard for squirrels, I am acting in a legal and lawful manner.

This is a very touchy subject. I think it depends on what you are hunting. I don’t think putting out corn for squirrel and then shooting all of them is hunting. But on the other hand if you are baiting for deer then you normally scout the property that you are hunting and have to find the game trails and the rubbed trees and ground scrapes in order to know where to put out your corn or to plant your food crop and where to put your tree stand. Along with all the above if you do put out a feeder or a pile of corn you have to cut shooting lanes also. There is a lot of time and money that goes into baiting it’s not as easy as dump out corn and shoot a deer like some are making it out to be. And the people that are baiting are normally hunting for the meat and like to keep the freezer full and not buy any meat from the store. So I say if it’s legal in your state then it’s up to you.

Not thinking with my feeling but with my up bringing , hunting ethics and moral standing. I posted it as a opinion posts. Because it is a good and controversial subject. Thanks for your reply.

Like my grandfather and father said.

We take the livestock to slaughter but hunt our game.

I was a master baiter.

Are you still a master baiter?

No because I was approached by a game warden and he asked me what I was doing in the woods. I explained to him that I'm a master baiter and was planning to spread some seed around one of my favourite trees for an upcoming squirrel hunt.

He immediately told me in a very firm way that type of behaviour would not be tolerated on public land and that type of activity should be done at home.

I still don't get it. The local conservation dept says baiting for squirrels IS legal and what would be the point of putting out bait in my house?

Hilarious. You just keep spreading that seed around. Make sure no one is looking.

Moral standing and/or ethics are one and the same thing.

But, by your saying so, you have IDed yourself as a feeler rather than a thinker.

Quote: The Thinking (T) and Feeling (F) preference pair refers to how you make decisions, either by objective logic or subjective feeling. Thinking and Feeling are opposite preferences. A person’s natural tendency toward one will be stronger than the other.

The general population is divided evenly between Thinkers and Feelers. The majority of females are Feelers while the majority of males are Thinkers.

Thinking (T)
Thinking people are objective. They make decisions based on facts. They are ruled by their head instead of their heart. Thinking people judge situations and others based on logic. They value truth over tact and can easily identify flaws. They are critical thinkers and oriented toward problem solving. Thinking does not mean a person is without emotion.

Feeling (F)
Feeling people are subjective. They make decisions based on principles and values. They are ruled by their heart instead of their head. Feeling people judge situations and others based on feelings and extenuating circumstances. They seek to please others and want to be appreciated. They value harmony and empathy.

Its like reading a Dr. Bronners label. I have not.

I think the problem here is definitions.

Hunting to eat vs hunting to eliminate pests vs hunting as a "sport".

I've done the first 2, but never the last one. I don't consider hunting a sport. Target shooting is a sport. Killing for the sheer pleasure of it should not be considered a "sport". JMHO

Exactly what I was thinking reading through the posts. And....I'd rather have someone baiting than putting another subdivision there.

Although I personally don't bait (except rodents), I also don't get upset at bow hunters baiting deer unless DNR occasionally bans it during tuberculosis outbreaks.

And there are us that can both think and feel. It's not black and white just like the post, or many other things in life. I'm glad I can do both think and feel.

Never baited/chummed in all my years of hunting and fishing I consider it unethical and it is NOT hunting. Fails chase/stalking is the only way I consider actual hunting. I also consider climbing a tree and sitting there until something walks under you to not be hunting. I understand tons of people do this but personally if you don’t give the animal a fair shot to get away it’s just not hunting in my opinion.

Apparently spoken by someone who never had to "hunt" to survive. LOL!

Backstop, You need to reread the title to the thread nowhere does it say survival. Also please refrain from making judgements about me or anyone else in your comments. Have a nice day.

I expected this to be a controversial subject. And I am truly loving the bantering. Keep it up guys!!!

BUT PLAY NICE.

Hunting vs killing over bait, two different things to me, whether the baiting is legal or not. I'm not making any moral judgment, just stating an opinion. If the animal needs to be killed, whether for food or protection of property, then do what is necessary. But don't call it the sport of hunting.

I agree baiting is for killing and hunting is for adventure. Baiting has its place pesting it is a job and bait is a good tool for that job. Hunting on the other hand is an adventure and test of your skills and knowledge for finding stalking and taking game.
