Wow great info and discussion. From your folks’ input, I definitely feel comfortable that the .177 is enough pellet for what I am hoping to do. Will definitely look to get my foot in the door with an HW50 soon. Thanks folks.

I have a couple of each (.177/.22) and for rabbits it was always my trusty old BSA 22 springer. Never paid much attention to distance. I just know when I pull the trigger that they are doing that famous back-flip.

I guess it is. It says Supersport on the scope rail. I have had it for many years but don't really know anything about it. My dad has the same gun in .177 with my front sight on it. It seems like a good quality gun and it shoots hard and straight.Unless I'm mistaken your BSA is a Supersport
Probably get some flack over this but a shot placement between the eye and ear at 35 -40 yards with a HW50s is highly irresponsible advice for a new shooter.Cottontails, absolutely. I'm pretty sure stiff wind can take out cottontails. If you're after jackrabbits, makes sure you have good shot placement between the eye/ear and you should be good to go out to 35-40 yards.
