Is it easy to hit targets passed 100 yards? Not for me

For me 100 yards shot is not too much of an issue now that I have shot enough and had gotten good results with starlings and doves hit. But another 15 yards or more, that's a huge challenge for me. I guess just like anything in life, one must try and keep on practising in order to get confident and consistent. I remember back in the days hitting bulleyes at 25 yards was difficult with my HW97 break barrel. Then with PCP that had gotten much easier and I gradually improved my shooting out to 50 yards, 75 yards and recently 100 yards. So my goal and next challenge is to hit consistently out to 150 yards and maybe beyond. Of course, my gear would have to be tuned properly and have the capability to do so. And most importantly, my shooting skill has to evolve as well. Practice, practice...

You did mention your parallax being off, it could also be your reticle is off just a bit which would make the parallax look off. I'd start there. It took me forever to get out to 100 yards, then another lifetime to get it really consistent and refining my scope and BC. Learning how to use a tripod has been fun. I'm having less issues going from 100 to 125 now that my parallax is a smidge better, it's still off but it's the scope and I've gotten my ballistic calc refined. I enjoy your videos, shooting on a slope is interesting, I'm basically dead flat so it's easier.

At SOME point, if the shooter has skill & abilities & is consistent their shooting, the GUN'S abilities & idiosyncrasies enter in to play. The difference of 20 or 30 more yards of distance can be very challenging for gun and shooter both. What gun are you shooting? (Haven't watched video yet). At one point 75 yards was my goal. Now I'm fully confident out to 130 (with my FX Boss) with my farthest kills at 175 & 178 yards (2 minutes apart) but conditions were perfect & I was unusually "on my game" that day!

@HogKiller. Yes, I am sure the parallax was part of the problem. I am pretty confident with 100 yards shots now, but I was having lots of problem with an extra 10 or 15 yards. Either my POI was not correct or the windage estimation. I will continue to work on these distances until I get them dialled in.

@Gerry52. Most of time is luck for me, lol. I am shooting my FX Impact MK2 600mm Slug A liner with H&N Gen2 25gr slugs. This is my long range gun. My Crown shoots to 100 yards as well, but I keep that gun for 75 yards in calm days. Great distances with your FX Boss.

I was on the farm this morning and while waiting for starlings, I shot some dirt out to 240 yards and later I used a palm size potato as a target to verify my POA and POI. Took me a few tries, but I eventually got it, LOL. Video to follow.

With a slow poke airgun, everything starts to ramp up very quickly after 100 yards. It can start to happen at 80 yards with some setups. Once you put things in perspective from experience, you realize what you’ve seen or heard are only highlight reel stuff. Then you can figure out what the limitations are of you and mainly your equipment. You will also be able to grasp how much the luck factor comes in with a long bomb. You are now turning a page to a frustrating chapter of airgun shooting. Try to enjoy the challenge and remember, you can always go back to the reality side of airgunning. That’s where we currently are technically. Being able to shoot 100 and in with great consistency. Slugs or pellets.

@Vetmx. Yes, there are definitely lots of challenges shooting passed 100 yards. Of course lots of long distance shots on Youtube were cherry-picked footages, but not to discredit those who actually made those shots. But in reality air guns have their limitations on further distances. I would not be launching slugs at any pests at those crazy distances, just occasionally target practice just for fun. And I did just that with the 240 yards potato shot. Lots of luck for sure to lop the slugs and estimate the wind. It took me 17 shots to clip the potato and shot 23 to finally knock it off the dirt mount. Ya, I will stick to what I can do currently and just tag them starlings out to 100 yards.

I shot a groundhog at 285 yards with my .25. I think I shared the footage of the shot with Bigragu in a text. The slug clearly entered the shoulder of the standing groundhog and clearly exited his lower gut on the other side. What does that tell you about our trajectory at those distances. That slug was going 1,045fps but was basically like shooting a full court shot with a basketball. Or lobbing mortar rounds. It was eye opening and something I felt like an idiot for not considering. My gun is accurate out that far. I was picking tiny rocks off his mound the day before. So I knew I was dialed for him when he made an appearance. That part of the whole glory story would never have made a YouTube video. It just would have been me sounding like I was unscrewing my elevation turret like I was trying to take the scope apart and casually making a shot like I do it every day.
