Is more better where caliber is concerned?

I have a .22, but I'd like to have more power, shoot further. What's the tradeoff of .30+ aside from cost of pellets?

I know it's obvious, but more ftlbs, more consistent velocity for each shot, higher precision, and being able to shoot further out appeal to me.

Thoughts?

Maybe louder. I have a 22 and 25 and they are are both about the same dB's but the .22 is shooting about 120 fps faster so that's probably what is making them the same. Don't know if sound is an issue for you though.
I have extremely consistent velocity with each shot so I don't know that that would be a positive for a 30.

You also get about 1/3rd the shot count of a .22 and the shot to shot consistency is the same as a .22 if both are properly setup. A heavy .22 carries about the same BC so long distance shooting is about equal but easier to get 75fpe in .30 than 50fpe in .22.

With that “more power” come “more limitations” as to where you can use said airgun. I’m currently loving sub 20 FPE because of all the opportunities it’s opened up for me.

I’d go for happy medium of 25 cal pellets or slugs.

Again, that comparison is flawed to the core, a worthless video in my opinion.

Ive found that sub 30fpe is great for being able to shoot places, nothing ive shot at with up to 30 fpe has had any crazy blow through (my closest shot has also been 30 yards , typically more so that could change if you are at closer ranger) or caused any damage to property, with .30 you may have to make more careful shots.

It's been awhile so I don't remember the specifics, I posted all my feeling about it on Airgun Warriors when he first came out with the video,

let me see if I remember correctly ?

He compared the 2 guns at 70 FPE,....which would be on the very upper level for most .25 shooters and on the very low level for .30 shooters.

if he wanted to do a real comparison he shod have shot 25gr .25 at 900 fps, 34gr .25 at 900 fps,...then 44gr .30 at 900 fps and 51gr .30 at 900 fps


That is the only way the comparison would be valid.

I have a .22 thats capable of shooting further than some of my .30 calibers, with slugs that is. Typically the larger calibers tend to do better in the wind but have found a huge difference between shooting slugs and pellets. Example would be a .22 slug next to a .30 pellet....I would pick the gun that shoots the .22 slug. Using the EBR as an example I believe they use a .30 caliber plug to score, therefore a smaller caliber can be an advantage in that sense. I think if the goal is to purely shoot further it doesn't always need to be a larger caliber.

There is only so many pellets available for the .30 and out of those pellets your gun maybe able to shoot well only one pellet. If that pellet is unavailable or on backorder, you are screwed.

Also in 22 there are slugs that are the same bc as a 22LR and fire just as fast. You won't find the same with a 30

i think in terms of where you can shoot , .22 backyard / .30 not so much have to be very very careful about pass through and what is behind your target .

But more slugs and Ebay pellets are available in 30 (and larger calibers).

Flanigan's 59 grain flat nosed pellets are very accurate in my Guantlet 30.

30 caliber is my favorite for air guns lately. The downside is you need a moderator to keep them back yard friendly. Ammo isn't as cheap and you get less shots per fill... but I consider 30 caliber 100+ FPE to be a "happy medium" for target shooting, distance shooting, pesting and larger game. A lot more satisfying to hit metal targets with a stout .30 too.
