Is there anything similar to the Airforce Texan w/o the air tank in the back?

The Texans has a straight valve leading into the barrel which makes them very efficient in air usage.

Every other rifle has the tank under the barrel facing forwards and air has to "navigate" two 90deg bends before entering the barrel.

Bends, nooks and crannies all introduce turbulence and reduces effiency.



The 50cal Texan will do 800+fpe standard at 3625psi, with an update on tank, valve and barrel (+4") it will do 1200+fpe and still do 3 shots at more than 1000+fpe from a single fill. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0l7mOFzDmTY

There are few others, amongst them the Extreme 50 cal and if i recall correctly it struggles to get 700+fpe from a 4500psi fill. https://www.extremebigboreairrifles.com/extreme-specs/

So from 700fpe to over 1200fpe on design alone, thats no coincidence.

We all have to get over some aesthetics when it comes to airgun performance. I like the traditional firearm shape and feel but I've sold out and own an FX Impact and two Texans. Chickenthief is right on the efficiency of the tank placement. Genius design that's still on the forefront of performance God knows how many years after it was introduced. 

One needs to decide whether you like 'pretty' or 'performance'. Granted, beauty is the eye of the beholder but like bumper sticker says..."Try mutton. 10 million coyotes can't be wrong"

So yes, you're over thinking it ;)

So 45 or 50 cal over 600 fpe???

If not then it's not really a Texan rival and hardly applicabe

Sorry, I didn't see that his ideas of an upgrade needed to be a .45 or .50. I missed that. My apologies for sure.

Thank you everyone for the thoughtful replies! Great points made, I've been looking at 357 options as well so I'm not totally averse to that. I suppose you could boil my main concerns down to A. I didn't like the idea of using the barrel as part of the stock from an ergonomics standpoint, but CaptKeith made an excellent point about looking into a custom stock/shroud. B. I was a little sketched out about having the tank exposed right next to my head, but as long as everything is well built and properly maintained I'd like to think it's a negligible risk.

I have also heard much about Veradium and plan on sending the bulldog out for an upgrade there at some point.

I myself look at AirForce guns as the original design for a air rifle. Lewis and Clark's Girandoni air rifle has the reservoir in the butt stock. So the design has been around for centuries! Now in all seriousness, the simplicity of design makes a Texan the perfect field gun. No wood parts makes them a all weather gun and rarely do they fail. If you can get over the looks and scope placement you will be happy with one.
