Is this normal for a .22 taipan vet long?

Picked up a Taipan Vet Long. 22 from Utah Airguns, gun was used on their range to show customers. So far its shooting ok. But not where i want it yet.

It is currently maxing out at 860-870fps with FX 25.4 gr pellets. That's good power for a .22 but I thought maybe it would have reached 900fps out of the box with these pellets.

Later today I'm going to pay attention to what the reg is set at.

Get a stronger hammer spring from Talon tunes.

Yet get immediate increase in power and it will now shoot the JSB 33.95's at over 800fps as well.

I have a .22 long and what you are seeing is about normal. Mine shoots a little faster than that but not by much. I have an added power plenum to mine but haven’t done anything else so the plenum is just for the extra air for now. I will echo what everyone else has said and get a heavier hammer spring. You could also change the regulator for a Huma and add a plenum after changing the spring if you really want to up the power.

My 22 Vet Long had a Power Plenum, Huma reg, and with the stronger hammer spring got exactly 55 foot pounds with JSB 33.95's. 945fps with MRD's.

I think you're right in the ballpark.

Mine has about two inches more barrel and a power plenum and maxes out at 905fps but the average over the fill is more like 885.

That's with the OEM hammer spring as far "in" as the adjustment will go and still catch the sear. And I haven't messed with the regulator pressure so it's still as it came from Taipan factory (seems like around 140 best I can tell).

As stated above, I think the guys that talk about pushing the MRDs 920+ (out of a Vet Long) have gone to the really heavy hammer spring.

I've been resisting like crazy as I don't want to give up the easy, smooth cocking that the platform is known for.

Franklink, I had the strong spring in my vet standard when I had it. Sure it got more power but cocking was definitely stiffer. Still smooth but not as pleasant.

Thanks guys for yalls insight. I feel better knowing that it seems about right for a factory Taipan. I don't really want to push it too hard. For some reason I assumed it was a little more powerful from factory. But you know what, in the past few months I've come to realize I don't need huge power.

I shot a shot string last night with the taipan, got about 45 shots at 860fps with the fx 25.4gr. Pretty awesome!

Just like all these guns, no one gun is the same and I enjoy learning each gun.

With your current tune, how fast does it send the 18's?

Mine barely stayed stock after receiving it. Currently power plenum and 100 bar reg setting. It tops out at 990 with 18 grain pellets.

Reason for asking is im wondering if your reg may be set higher than the hammer spring can handle. Have you run it down off the reg to see if velocity climbed at all? Just curious.

Also, as good as the cz barrels are. My leade and crown needed attention. If you think it should be shooting better, those probably could use some attention.

Great looking stock! That is my favorite one of them all.
