is this pellet strikes on the moderator?

I have more pics if that helps. This is a new, never even been threaded onto a rifle moderator that I just got in the mail. The only other moderator I have is a 3D printed one so I'm not really sure. To me it looks like it, which would mean I got a used one, but since I have no experience with this I would like to get others opinion before I contact the seller. It was sold to me as a new one from a reputable dealer.

Sure looks like it to me. See if you can clean those marks off and shoot it to see if it happens again. If so, contact the seller and send it back

Yes. Is it mechanically sound? Is it dented or bent. If no, i wouldnt waste my time waiting for a new one , but i would put the seller on blast.

That looks like the entrance end of the moderator. Pellets strikes usually occur near the exit end of the moderator. And because the threads tighten up in only one orientation, all of the strikes are usually just in one spot. Also, the marks appear on the face of the flange not just on the inside edge which is where pellet strikes usually occur in the case for a minor misalignment.
I wonder if it's some discoloration from the manufacturing process? Since you haven't yet installed it, it might turn out to be just fine. Most of these you can disassemble and look at the components inside if it has been used, you will see a light gray coating of lead or lubricant inside and some wear marks on the screw threads where it has been threaded on and off.

It's possible that those are marks from whatever apparatus they used to hold the part while applying the finish to it.
Maybe residue from a rinse or cleaning agent from the manufacturing process?
Have you tried to wipe it off?

thanks for the replies. yes its the end that attaches to the barrel with the cap that threads onto the barrel taken off, no marks on that cap and none on the goes out of end. everything else looks new and unused, there are 4 of these marks. I don't want to name the seller until I talk to them, its a popular and reputable dealer that I find hard to believe would send out a used product as new, but I find it hard to ignore the marks. I'm going to contact the seller and just ask. The rifle I bought this for is on backorder and the PCP that I have would need an adapter to use it, I do have a multi pump with the 1/2 in threads but it is a 22 and this moderator is for a .25/.30 so testing it with a 22 wouldn't prove much.

Fwiw thats where all my pellet strikes have happened from underpowered shots, double feeds or gun breakage.. Aea problems haha...

Wait? You said your moderator was new, never threaded onto a rifle. Then you said this ^^^. Are you talking about previous moderators here?
It would be very unusual to get strikes that close to the muzzle of a rifle. Strikes occur much closer to the exit end of the moderator. Any strikes that close to the muzzle would mean things were so far out of square that you could literally see things were crooked.

No, I've never had a pellet strike with another moderator, that was 6gun that said thats where his strikes have happened. The moderator in question has never been used by me, the marks made me think it had been used. I've contacted the manufacturer and am waiting to see what they say. I'm beginning to lean toward manufacuring/handling made the marks.

Those are pellet strikes and that mod is used. It’s not new. Someone screwed it onto a gun with a horribly machined shroud or double loaded the gun a couple times. Double loading doesn’t always result in clipping if your machining on the gun and shroud is spot on. I just double loaded yesterday while hunting. I fired my gun with no concern.

It even looks like there are cracks from the strikes if you zoom in. I would contact the seller for sure.

Those are from the anodizing. Depending on the chemicals used you will get some crusties on spots. Nothing to worry about.
