Issue with my Airhog carbon tank valve

I have had this tank since 2011. It has never been out of my house and I have always taken very good care of it. I probably haven't filled it more than 15 times in the past 13 years.
I finally got me a compressor that is capable of filling the tank. I normally have been filling it up to around 4000 PSI. So I decided to take it up to 4500 and right around 4300 I got a leak coming out of the shut off valve. I stopped and drained the tank, and today started filling it again. It was doing fine till about 3000 than the leak started again. I am now draining the tank once again. I am hoping that once drained I can remove the top part of the shutoff valve and see if possibly there may be a fractured o ring. I am not sure just what I am getting into though, and dealing with high pressures is not a good idea when your really not sure just how these things work. I can't seem to find anyone who deals with these things.
I am looking for some advise and hopefully someone can tell me what I need to do.
Thank you,
Gene from Pa.

A surefire way to check is to submerge the tank in water while it has some pressure in it. I have found that if a tank doesn't seem to hold pressure , it is the o-ring at the tank neck , the burst disc is not properly tightened , or the valve itself does not seal completely. Submerging the tank will give you an answer quickly.

The leak I am experiencing is coming out of the top knob which is the black shut off valve. I removed the black knob and there was what I thought a hex nut. I was thinking that underneath the nut I might find an o ring that may be the issue. When I turned the hex nut, the whole regulator started to come with it. It seems like this whole part is sealed, and I may just have to replace the whole regulator. I believe the size of the regulator thread is a 7/8-14, but will check it out tomorrow. So I'll try and find a new regulator.

I confirmed this morning that the thread size going into my tank is 7/8-14. I'm going to have to replace it because I am not finding a way to fix this one. I am not experienced enough to trust myself. I am posting another photo showing just where the leak is coming from. It is coming at the very tip of my scribe. I actually thought that the hex nut surrounding where my scribe is pointing to would be the way to disasemble it but after looking at it I believe that this is used to remove the regulator from the tank itself. I can see no way to disasemble it further, but there has to be a way.

Try applying heat to the large hex nut . Sometimes some heat and using a rubber mallet will break a stubborn fastener loose. Trouble is you may not be able to source a rebuilt kit ( or parts) for that particular valve. Smart money says just replace the valve and be done with it. Make sure to use a new o-ring with the replacement , one should be included .

I resealed an identical Airhog valve like yours for a friend a few years ago. If you take a crescent wrench and unscrew the square behind the threads there is a rubber o ring behind it that seals the assembly. Replace it and you'll be good to go. No need to trash a perfectly good valve. Also, DO NOT submerge the valve unless you want to permanently fog up the gauge.
