It's not at all loud, but it ain't mousefart.

Honestly it's really hard to shoot anything over .22 in my backyard. I do have a few mousefart .22s though.

Edgun Veles .22 tuned at ~19fpe - with stock moderator I would call it a mouse fart. It just goes Pfffftt with each shot.

Taipan Vet .22 Shorty @ 32 fpe. The sounds of the target smack is magnitudes louder than the shot.

Cricket 2 Tactical 45 .22 @ 49fpe. I cranked the reg on this up to 150bar to see what the gun can do. .22 Redesigns @ around 920-930 very nice. It's a smack when shot, but with a Neil Clague moderator it could easily be a nailgun or some other tool.

almost all 22/177 with a shroud or ldc are fine out front 50+y from neighbors .. get up close to the fenceline on a quiet evening when neighbors are outside and almost all are still too loud and will get noticed and unmoderated, well everyone within 2 blocks is going to know your at it again lol.. takes reduced power at least and double snuffed preferably -shroud+ldc .. prod with a sumo is my choice for that scenario if im after a nutter back by the coop ...

Well my .30cal Maverick is MUCH louder than the rimfires at my NRL22 matches (unmoderated with a non-airstripping CF / threaded titanium shroud).

When I run the 350mm 9mm barrel in my single shot Leshiy and tune it for >100FPE, it's one of the quietest PCPs that I've ever had with my .30cal Sumo moderator (the report is "front yard friendly"). This Sumo bore diameter is perfect for .35 IMO.

Now when I install my Leshiy's 350mm .30cal barrel with that same .30cal Sumo - it's pretty loud (not very "backyard friendly"). It's a good example of how the moderator bore diameters can affect the performance

I'm shooting a .22 Bobcat (on loan to me) a .25 Royale 500 & a .30 Boss (Royale & Boss are mine). I have one Donny FL Ronin (in .30) that I use on all 3. Bobcat & Royale are backyard friendly. With the Donny, MOUSE FART! The Boss is waaay quieter with the Donny (borderline backyard friendly) but it'll never be MF quiet. Still my favorite gun.

I'd imagine any PCP that doesn't have a compelling reason to be loud (Leshiy 2 for example) can be tuned to be almost silent. A Crosman 1322 can be made to be pretty much as quiet as a bow. i.e. you only hear a whoosh of air and perhaps the sound of impact. Maybe it's a smidge louder than a bow as there's a "penny drop" sound from the trigger mechanism.

Any 30 fpe .22, properly tuned, should be very backyard friendly with a decent moderator. All of mine are, and the Taipan Veteran is the quietest. But, on a whole different level is my HW100, .177, which I tuned down to around 11.5 fpe. All you hear is a little mechanical sound. It really opened my eyes to the attraction of the lower power tune, with the added benefit of a greatly increased shot count. Sometimes, we Americans mess things up with our obsession with power.

My .25 EDgun Lelya with its stock moderator is the quietest PCP I own. It currently shoots at around 33-35 fpe. All others benefit from the addition of a moderator. The primary benefit of using a moderator is not spooking quarry. Some animals will take off after I take a shot or two with the Lelya, but my other guns will run just about everything off without using an additional moderator.

When target shooting I often wonder how loud some of my rifles sound at a distance. My Brocock Bantam Sniper HR .25 pops with its unmoderated shots shooting around 45-52 fpe. A Donny FL Sumo quiets her down the point where the sounds of action and impact of pellets hitting the trap are the dominant sounds of my shots.

I was shooting my airguns with my boys recently. My son had my 25/250 Leshiy Classic with STO insert shooting polymags around 14 FPE.

I was looking through my scope waiting for the wind to cooperate and I saw a small cloud of dirt fly up next to the target we were both using.

I was absolutely shocked he had even taken a shot. I heard nothing despite him sitting next to me at a 4' folding table.

I have come to believe that there is a point of diminishing returns when it comes to making airguns quieter than the sound of impact unless it really improves the experience for the shooter.

If I had the type of property where I could shoot all the time I'd focus my money as much on reducing the mechanical noise next to my ear as I would muzzle report.

Slightly off topic, but there is a guy in our NRL22 club that had a custom Voodoo rimfire shooting Lapua CenterX around 1080FPS with THE QUIETEST silencer that I've ever heard! I kid you not, his rifle is only marginally louder than my .22 Mutant shorty tuned for 12FPE!!!! We had a VERY tough time spotting for him at our last match and had to have a second spotter to tell us when he took his shots.

The crazy thing is how small and compact it is. It seemed a tad shorter than the DonnyFL Koi and not very large in diameter. This is the one he has: https://deadairsilencers.com/products/mask/

i do like 'em quiet and neighbor friendly.

here's one of my break-barrels with a DonnyFL suppressor.

Recently added an LDC to the Diana Chaser and knocked off a good 20dB.

Some air rifles I have only shoot about 500FPS, so they're inherently quiet. Add some muffling and you can really get a barely whispering plinker.

Firstly, thanks for all your various findings and opinions.

Given the variables of power levels, the difference between the acoustics of different settings ( outdoors, indoors ) and the subjective difference in how we as individuals hear, is there any way or indeed any point in trying to standardise testing of decibel levels.

Ideas for how this could be improved?.

Again thanks for all input.

I guess I'm the lucky one in that I'm the quiet one in my neighborhood. One of my neighbors was shooting a few miles away and everyone was hearing it.

I have two CO2 and a gas piston and the gas piston is louder than the others. Still, my neighbors don't seem to mind. The older couple living next to me sat outside and watched me get in some practice two weekends ago.

I'm so lucky to be surrounded by gun-nuts and ex-military.

Harry,

Yes, standardizing measurement of gun loudness and silencer effectiveness would be awesome.

However, the amount of variables you need to keep the same is huge. Not easy to do.

So far the best what we have is comparative tests — ONE tester with ONE setup compares guns/ silencers. Then at least the test readers know which is louder/ less loud in comparison to the others — always considering caliber, power, with or without pellet, inside or outside, etc.

In my Silencer Specs Table I have the data of 13 silencer loudness tests included (attached).

The Gen 1 Marauder I just sold sounded mouse fart to me, integral moderation.

I still have a Disco (that I plan to sell) that sounds like an unsuppressed 10/22 with subsonic .22lr to me. Not bad for a powder burner but loud as f*k (to me) for an airgun.

I have a (old) Beeman R9 which I find acceptably quiet for the power level, maybe slightly less noisy than a suppressed 10/22 with subsonic 22lr.

Also have a (old) Beeman P1 which seems about as loud as the R9 but it's got a different sound profile.
